Elsy Cruz Parra, a Richfield High School graduate, is considering a career as a doctor. Musab Mohamed, a Maple Grove High School graduate, discovered that he loves radiology. Sydney Rupert, a rising senior at Minnetonka High School, got a jump-start on her plans to become a surgeon. What do all these kids have in common? They're all students of color. And they all participated in the Hennepin Healthcare Talent Garden summer internship program. The program is on a mission to get more people of color into the healthcare talent pipeline. Why? Research shows that a diverse medical workforce leads to better health outcomes for people of color—from top level employees to entry-level workers across all touch points of care. While more people of color have been enrolling in medical school in recent years, the majority of active U.S. physicians identify as white. But the challenge of diversifying medical schools extends beyond recruiting students; it involves mentorship and institutional support. The Hennepin Healthcare Talent Garden is an example of how local initiatives can drive healthcare hiring and retention solutions from the onset and take steps towards bridging racial disparities in healthcare through early exposure and hands-on learning. How else can we shape a more diverse and equitable future medical workforce?

We, the Pharm.D Interns of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at JKKN College of Pharmacy, are thrilled to introduce our one-day Learner's Lead Conference on November 30, 2023, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. This isn't just another conference where professionals speak to students; it's an experience crafted by students, for students. At this conference, we, the Pharm.D Interns, step into the role of speakers. Through our presentations, we'll unveil the critical thinking and problem-solving skills honed during our internship period. We're not here to overwhelm you with theories in this conference. Our focus is on sharing how classroom knowledge translates to real-world patient scenarios. It's the bridge between textbooks and the bedside. By attending our conference, you're not just a passive listener. You become an active participant in a learning environment, where you can gain insights, ask questions, and engage in discussions that enrich your understanding of patient care. This conference is a bridge between classroom learning and the realities of healthcare. I am thrilled to announce that today marks one month of my time working at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center! I am presently serving as an Administrative Assistant II at the Sloan Kettering Institute for Dr. Rui Gardner, the head of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility, and Dr. Nicholas Socci, the head of the Bioinformatics Core Facility. While this job has proven to be challenging, it is incredibly rewarding doing work that I enjoy and furthering the valuable mission of the organization. However, my path to securing a position post-undergrad didn’t look like many of my peers. The lucky ones were able to secure a return offer shortly after their senior-year internships ended in their chosen field or hurried off to continue their studies. My major didn’t exactly have a direct path to the career I wanted to pursue, unlike many of my peers, and that was something that was difficult to come to terms with. I spent the entire summer after graduation applying for jobs. I moved home, and spent much of my summer hunched over my computer, sending in nearly 100 applications. The worst part? Most of them won’t ever get back to me. That being said, I could have chosen to work at an accounting firm, and maybe I would have had an easier time with the job search, but would I have been happy with the job I have now? Probably not. All of this to say - it’s okay to take a path that looks different from your peers and classmates. If you have the luxury of being able to pursue what you’re passionate about, do it. Don’t be discouraged when you apply to an obscene number of jobs and get rejected from nearly as many. Allow yourself to worry about the fact that you don’t know what you’re doing, and when the doubt creeps in, know that you’re on the right path. 

As I near the conclusion of my final semester as an undergraduate at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I want to reflect on some insights from both my academic journey and personal experiences. This semester has been truly remarkable, offering me a wealth of opportunities to grow! Achievements: • Discovering my true calling for Public Health Sciences within UMass Amherst School of Public Health & Health Sciences • Securing a scholarship to participate in the IGNITE National Young Women’s Conference, focused on fostering political leadership among women • Thriving in an internship at CareCentrix and finding a true passion for enhancing the patient-provider experience • Developing an Excel model without having any prior programming experience • Leading the UMass Public Health Club, which brought moments of gratitude and taught me resilience • Navigating a challenging yet rewarding work environment at NSOTOSS • Enrolling in business classes at Isenberg School of Management, UMass Amherst that emphasized the importance of efficiency, engagement, and motivation Lessons Learned: • Recognizing that changing majors doesn't mean failing in other endeavors • Understanding that every mistake serves as a learning opportunity and a chance to try again • It is important to set yourself up for success and look out for your future self • Saying yes to opportunities and showing up matters more than anything • Apply for positions ahead of time and connect with your network! At times, I've found myself as the only First-Generation POC in a room of people dedicated to healthcare reform. This has fueled my commitment to further my knowledge in healthcare management while upholding my values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Onto the next chapter!
