Who Supports Your Leaders? The wellbeing of leaders is crucial—not only for their own health, satisfaction, and success, but also for the broader impact they have on their teams and organisations. The “leadership wellbeing shadow” that every leader casts can significantly influence employee and organisational outcomes, including workplace wellbeing, engagement, culture, psychological safety, performance, retention, and integrity. In light of one of this year’s major HR and risk culture trends—heightened employer responsibilities to protect employee psychosocial health (PSH)—the importance of leader wellbeing has never been more pronounced. Recent updates in WHS legislation and new codes of practice highlight the increased energy and focus on briefing leaders about their obligations and potential liabilities. Australians are experiencing stress and burnout at record rates. Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2024 report revealed that 48% of Australian employees report experiencing stress. Notably, the report also highlights the critical impact of management and leadership, finding that those who work in companies with poor management practices are 60% more likely to be stressed than individuals working in organisations with good management practices. A great article Drew. In the words of one of my favourite bands, Idles, “fear leads to panic. Panic leads to pain. Pain leads to anger. Anger leads to hate.” (Danny Nedelko). At the heart of toxic workplaces is a culture of management by fear. In reaction to that weaponising of fear, there are those who are scared by it and those who become cynical as a way to cope or normalise what they experience in the workplace. Left unchecked and fuelled by fear, the cynicism can become full blown, toxic negativity, permeating their life, not just work. It’s crucial to have positive leadership identify it and takes the necessary steps to overcome it and turn it around standing with the staff.

Is Wellbeing determined by company policies or leadership? Wellbeing starts with leaders! Imagine this scenario: You work for a company that boasts an impressive wellbeing strategy. They offer perks like free gym classes at the city's top fitness center, coaching sessions with a renowned health coach, mental health support from a team of experts, and a cafeteria with a huge salad bar and diverse selection of healthy meals. But... Your boss gets upset when you miss a phone call because you're in a gym class, denies your request for bi-weekly coaching or therapy sessions, and schedules meetings during lunch, serving pizza to attendees. Can you truly enjoy the benefits of the company's wellbeing initiatives and cultivate a lifestyle that enhances overall wellbeing and team productivity? Would you feel motivated? Those who know me would tell you I am passionate about supporting leaders, teams and organizations to elevate their effectiveness leading to healthier cultures.
