Future of Collaboration: Understanding Interoperability | What does the future of collaboration look like in your industry? We believe that gaining insights into interoperability is key to shaping that vision. Interoperability holds diverse meanings for different individuals. A commonly accepted definition is that it refers to the capability of two or more systems or components to exchange information and utilize the exchanged information (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 1990). The HL7 EHR Interoperability Work Group crafted a framework, that explores three distinct perspectives: Technical Interoperability: - Rooted in Claude Shannon's information theory, technical interoperability, proving 100% reliable communication over a noisy channel (Shannon 1948), moves data from system A to system B, neutralizing the effects of distance. - Domain-independent, it remains indifferent to the meaning of the exchanged information. Semantic Interoperability: - At the core of healthcare interoperability, semantic interoperability ensures that both system A and system B interpret data uniformly. - Facilitating computers to understand, interpret, and use data without ambiguity, it is specific to domain and context, usually involving the use of codes and identifiers. Process Interoperability: - Coordinating work processes, and process interoperability enables the collaboration of business processes in organizations housing system A and system B. - Achieved when human beings share a common understanding, it ensures business systems interoperate, and work processes are coordinated. - Benefits are realized when the new system is used in day-to-day work; deviation from intended use is considered a failure. - Recognizing the importance of reengineering work processes for optimal utilization of electronic systems is a long-acknowledged yet insufficiently learned lesson. #interoperability #healthit
