Do you know that the global population is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030 but food produced will only meet 60% of the population's needs? I see everyone talking about millet today and for a good reason because these grains need not only fewer resources to grow but are also naturally gluten-free, contain more complex carbohydrates and are more fibrous. The Indian government has also been promoting millet as an important component of the agricultural landscape in India. This is because millets are native to Asia, specifically India, where they have been cultivated for thousands of years. However, despite the benefits and increasing millet production, we still don't know how to eat our millet. With around 30 million tons produced annually, most of it is used for fodder and cattle feeding. Many American entrepreneurs are promoting millet agriculture but most of it is used in making millet liquor. They often struggle with consumer adoption. Seems like the solution to the twin problems of food shortage and better consumer adoption of millets is offered by Indian homegrown brands such as Tata Consumer Soulfull, Manna, Slurpp Farm, Pioneer Foods, Nestle A+ I don’t look at all of us as competitors as we are co-creating a category of millet-based foods for the world - we benefit from each other’s awareness campaigns :) Through namkeen, breakfast cereals & instant mixes, Indian brands are taking this humble grain to the global dining table, with innovative value-added products. My breakfasts consist of Ragi Bread from a local bakery in Jaipur (How Sweet), jowar roti in summer and millet-based chilla mixes or pasta (Mille/Pink Harvest) As a millet entrepreneur, I want to know which brand and products are you using to incorporate millet into your diet. PS - I love to add Roasty Tasty’s Bajra Mix Desi Spicy to my dahi for the perfect chatpata twist to the summer! #millet #entrepreneur

Weekend calls for outings and shopping. How can be outing be complete with eating out? Being a mother of Gen Z, I have been exploring Fast Food, Italian cuisine, Chinese cuisine, and whatnot. Last Saturday I was lucky enough to influence kids to try Indian Thali. Surprisingly, kids enjoyed the food also the service of the staff serving food, the way they were requesting, and offer 2nd and 3rd servings. The variety of food was an attempt to balance the tastes of different age groups, and different communities. It’s an amazing concept of India Thali. Indians are serious about their food and much before dieticians brought the concept of balanced meals. India knew how to incorporate all kinds of items in their platter to make it scrumptious and satisfying. The concept of the Thali has been ingrained in India’s dining traditions since primitive times. The items change depending on the geographical reason and culture. History and culture behind the Thali - Unlike the continental or western buffet, Indians believe in being served all at once and a second helping if necessary. The Thali is the product of several age-old aspects of Indian life, the importance of nutritionally balanced meals, variety of flavors, portion control, and aversion to sharing food to limit the spread of communal diseases. The word thali is derived from ‘thaal’, a circular tray. The earliest thali was made from banana leaves in southern India. Times changed and India shifted to brass, to biodegradable containers to plastic, and to porcelain. Important thalis of India - As Indians got curious about the roots of their dietary habits, making a shift from fast foods rejected by health experts; thalis made a comeback. Soon came vegetarian Jain thalis without garlic or onions in Gujarat, Madrasi thalis, and North India thalis with paneer, chole, saag, daal makhani, and a choice of bread and rice. Each state started having its own thali with regional varieties all in one platter. What are your plans for this weekend? Indian Thali or Fast Food.
