📢 Patients as Healthcare Professionals? Continued…
In today's healthcare landscape, patient and family engagement has evolved from a peripheral concept to a core element. This transformation envisions patients as active collaborators in their care, promising a more compassionate and effective healthcare system. Despite its benefits, such as increased trust and improved clinical outcomes, barriers like tokenism and inadequate organizational support still hinder genuine engagement. My 2020 article, "Using Shared Mental Models to Conceptualize Patients as Professionals, Decision-Makers, Collaborators, and Members of Interprofessional Healthcare Teams," explores these challenges and proposes a redefinition of patients' roles through the concept of shared mental models (SMMs).
SMMs facilitate effective collaboration among diverse groups by integrating patients' experiential knowledge with healthcare professionals' technical expertise. This paradigm shift challenges the traditional hierarchical model, advocating for patients as professionals and decision-makers. By valuing patients' lived experiences, healthcare providers can enhance service design and delivery, leading to better clinical outcomes and a more inclusive, patient-centric culture. Embracing this collaborative model is essential for achieving sustainable and effective healthcare outcomes, transforming patients from passive recipients to essential partners in health co-creation.
