Similar mindset to turning over rocks to find the best opportunities in the market.
We hosted a scavenger hunt through Grand Central for our summer interns, who worked together in this game of strategy and communication to solve clues in the passages, concourses, tracks and trains.

I should add that these are PAID internships. Not only does this make our internships accessible to those who can’t afford to work for free, there is a noticeable difference in the quality and consistency of their work over the span of the semester. It is a lot easier to give more to an organization when they are compensating you for your time. At the very least, I believe we need to be paying interns enough to cover the indirect expenses that come with a job (gas, meals, clothing, etc.).

Managing Partner at Monge Capital - Social Impact Financing - Co Founder of Open Access - Real Estate Executive Council member - Real Estate Association of Latinx Professionals (REAL) Board President
Here is a thought..... find one or more local high school student, seed their success with meaningful mentorship and internship opportunities through college. Imagine the outcome and what those students will likely do when they are capable professionals? #Step&Repeat
I’m excited to share that I completed my summer internship at Monge Capital Advisors! Over the past eight weeks, I’ve experienced tremendous growth and learning at Monge Capital, a leader in Community Development Finance, especially the New Market Tax Credit Program. Here, Monge Capital’s mentorship has catalyzed my skill and expertise in bringing real-estate projects committed to serving its surrounding underprivileged communities to life. The support and trust that Monge Capital has given me significantly enhanced my knowledge and skills in consulting, financial analysis, and grant writing. My experience as an intern also catalyzed my leadership skills, allowing me to build the foundation for bringing in the Environmental Protection Agency’s grant opportunities to finance projects committed to environmental justice. A heartfelt thank you to Jeff Monge, Brianne Andrea L., Francisco Tejada, and Lizy Perez for your mentorship, guidance, and memorable experiences this summer! As I continue my professional journey, the knowledge and skills I gained at Monge Capital will invigorate my commitment to uplifting and representing underserved communities.

The first in a series in which I grow increasingly aware of my mortality as we interview our current crop of interns.
It's a staple of every summer at LJC to welcome a new intern class to our offices! 👏 Working with students is always a ton of fun, and this year, we decided to put the class of 2024 to the test with some LJC trivia. Check out the first installment of our intern pop quiz as they tackle the trivia question: What year was LJC founded? 🤔 Here's a hint: while our firm was founded in 1999, it was incorporated with LJC in 2019. Check out their answers and let us know yours in the comments below! ⬇️

During a Partner Insights session, one of our summer interns, Aiden, asked David M. Kaplan, C.P.A., "How did you decide that BRC was the right sized firm, given the options of larger or smaller firms?" Here is David's Response:

Over this spring term, I completed an internship with Pinnacle Associates where I learned some of the techniques for determining asset allocation. Whereby, it is important to ask the client questions regarding their time horizon, upcoming expenditures, and risk tolerance. Based on their answer we can decide how to better allocate the assets and when we pick equities, we model them after the 11 sectors of the S and P 500. When selecting stocks we utilized two strategies: active management and passive indexing. With active management we have to make an effort to avoid idiosyncratic risk. In addition to using passive indexing and asset management, we look to further diversify our stock portfolio by examining large cap stocks representing companies with a market capitalization more than $10 billion. Another way to diversify a portfolio, is by looking at value and growth styles of investing. We can also diversity in the holdings we have within the US and outside the US. The third technique I learned to diversify a portfolio is by buying bonds and there are two risks that come with them. The first is credit risk and to avoid this try to pick bonds with a BBB (investment grade) rating or higher. The second risk is interest rate risk which means since bonds trade like stocks every day, they are susceptible to interest rate fluctuation. To avoid interest rate risk, simply hold the bond to maturity. When selecting bonds it is important to look at its coupon or interest rate. The relationship between interest rate and bond pricing is inverse. Within bonds there are three types; corporate, government, and municipal. The way we diversify bonds is by the ladder amount, meaning bonds have different maturity dates. Lastly, I learned a general overview on how to pick stocks. Using indicators such as price to earnings, credit rating, net leverage, dividends, shareholder yield, free cash field, and revenue. I would like to thank Pinnacle Associates, Ltd. Associates and Timothy Piacentini, CFA for all of their help and guidance over these past several weeks. This experience helped to expand my knowledge of finance and the asset allocation of portfolios and I look forward to taking this knowledge to my summer internship at Ridgetop Research in NYC.

Looking ahead, Downtown Raleigh’s vision for the future must be grounded in our partnerships and relationships we build with one another 🤝 Our new Economic Development Strategy outlines opportunities to grow partnerships and create fresh strategies to bridge missing or underused connections in the community. How? 📌 Work with local partners to bring even more life science companies to downtown, further bolstering this industry and local innovation (ex. Linking NCSU’s Centennial Campus and downtown as complementary innovation centers) 📌 Develop a specialized ecosystem for Minority-and Women-Owned Businesses that provides more financial support, more space for testing/pop-ups, and more internship opportunities 📌 Broaden the overall business brand and appeal of Downtown Raleigh as a home to the highest concentration of creative and design-based firms in Wake County/the Triangle Learn more about the Economic Development Strategy 👇 https://bit.ly/3MVU0WX

🎉 We are delighted to announce the successful conclusion of the second cohort of the StockMarket.et internship program! 🎉 Over the past 8-weeks, we’ve had the privilege of working with a remarkable group of interns who, despite coming from diverse backgrounds, were united by their enthusiasm for the world of capital markets and business. This cohort embarked on a journey that was both challenging and rewarding, and we’re thrilled to share their achievements. From engaging in weekly discussions and lively debates to mastering market research and delving into algorithmic trading, our interns tackled a range of stimulating activities. They explored critical aspects of capital markets, including market readiness assessments, fintech adoption, and brokerage technology opportunities. They also gained hands-on experience in valuation using different models. Additionally, our interns dived into the entrepreneurial side of business, learning how to build a venture from the ground up—from ideation and development to crafting business strategies and implementation plans. They honed their research skills by working on real-world projects, developing robust business ideas, and crafting compelling pitch decks and business model canvases. Each week, they participated in vibrant discussions and debates on a variety of topics, which expanded their perspectives and pushed the boundaries of conventional thinking. A huge shoutout to Hermella Mebratu Bejiga Tsion Girma Noel T. Negash Tazeb Getnet Yoseph Fetene Nathnael Million and Meron Asnake for your outstanding contributions and dedication! Your hard work and enthusiasm have been truly inspiring. We are excited to announce that some of these talented individuals will be joining our team, and we look forward to the new energy and insights they will bring. At Stockmarket.et, we are not about following a single path because that limits creativity. We’re about creating those 'aha' moments that inspire you to chase your passions with enthusiasm. As we celebrate the successes of this cohort, we are just getting started! Be ready—our third cohort will open soon, and we’re excited to see what the next group of talented individuals will bring. The journey continues, and we can’t wait for you to be a part of it! In the meantime, enjoy a sneak peek video of the incredible experience this cohort had. Here’s to continued success and new beginnings! 👏
