Dario Gil’s call for an open, transparent, and inclusive approach to AI is crucial, but it scratches the surface of what’s needed. While collective involvement and governance are important, they are not enough. The stakes of AI are immense, affecting not just our generation but future ones as well. We must move beyond a superficial "yes, yes, yes" to a deeper examination of our intentions. Technologies reflect our values, so our approach must be a genuine commitment to raising our standards. If we build AI as we currently treat animals or each other, we set a troubling precedent. Our relationship with AI should exceed our present shortcomings and reflect our highest ethical aspirations. We need to confront our limitations and engage with the difficult ethical issues we often avoid. How will we regard AI if it becomes sentient? What responsibilities will we assume toward such an entity? These questions demand a more compassionate dialogue. Our ethical framework should guide us in creating AI that is not just a reflection of our best intentions but a beacon for a more just and empathetic future, a testament to our highest human values.
