Agree with this completely. In addition, mentoring between intergenerational colleagues, can come from BELOW as well as from ABOVE.

I have seen more people celebrate breaks than I have seen people celebrate work. Cheat day for those dieting is the loudest, and public holidays are the bomb to staff and students. In our world, a person who loves to read is a Bookworm, one who loves the gym is a Gym Rat, and one who loves education is a Nerd. We create and use these labels with more than enough denigration. It is almost as if we are trying to shame people for being excellent while simultaneously being jealous that we are not them. Now, I am not endorsing obsession. However, a certain level of enthusiasm and passion is required to build excellence in every field. So, when we shame people for putting in the work, we are shaming excellence. The downside of our consistent disparagement of excellence is the endorsement of mediocrity.

🐕 In the 1960s, psychologists Martin Seligman and Steven Maier experimented with dogs, which led to the discovery of 'learned helplessness'. This term describes how continuous hardship can make some dogs, and by extension, people, stop trying to escape difficult situations, even when escape becomes possible. However, some dogs resisted this mindset and continued to try. In the 1970s, Seligman and two colleagues delved deeper into this concept into what is known as attribution theory. They studied how our interpretation of setbacks – whether we view them as personal or external, permanent or temporary, and widespread or isolated – can result in either learned helplessness or resilience. This understanding encourages us to look beyond just actions to consider how our thoughts and beliefs can either trap us in a state of helplessness or empower us to tackle challenges. I want to share two personal experiences where I learned to persevere. 👮♂️ The first was during my time in the Swedish National Service, where I trained as a medical sergeant in the Marines. The training was, at times, very tough, and there were many times we felt like quitting, but the ethos of the service instilled in us the importance of resilience over helplessness — an invaluable lesson for life. 🏛️ The second experience was during my initial year in India. Setting up a company required a whole year of battling through paperwork and obtaining permissions from various authorities. This was when India started to open up economically, but bureaucracy was still a significant hurdle. Despite several moments of doubt, I persevered. Quitting is never an option, as a turn in the road doesn't mean it's the end. Training our minds to navigate and endure challenging times is essential. Our perspective can significantly alter the outcome! People who triumph over extreme challenges do so not because of inherent advantages but because they consciously decide to persist and not give in. Resilient individuals endure when times get hard and remember that things always seem impossible until they're achieved! Finally, the ability to overcome setbacks often comes from within. #Resilience #OvercomingAdversity #AttributionTheory #Inspiration
