These are not “differences of opinion”… these are corporate hate crimes. And no, that is neither hyperbole nor exaggeration: “A hate crime (also known a bias crime) is crime where a perpetrator targets a victim because of their physical appearance or perceived membership of a certain social group.” Are we down with committing hate crimes because some of our consumers really really want us to? Happy Pride Month! Every year, June is our opportunity to celebrate, honor, commemorate, and stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. We take a moment to reflect on the past. We pay tribute. We spend time in community with each other. We dance! We remember that each one of us, regardless of our sexual orientation or identity, is worthy of #belonging. So where do we start the celebration? There are so many impactful (and fun) ways to celebrate #Pride. Here are my top three ways to get involved this month: 1. Get Out There: Be a part of your community. Support your local Pride events. Attend fundraisers, parades, marches, and festivals. Donate your time or money. Write your local legislators. Get involved. And read books! 2. Gain Local Knowledge: Do you know the history of Pride Month where you live? What are some of the struggles and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community in your town or city? What are the some of the issues currently being faced right in your backyard? We need to all be better educated because knowledge is key to change. 3. Be an Ally: Stand in solidarity, whether you're a part of the LGBTQ+ community or an #ally. Use your voice and privilege to always speak up. While going to events and celebrations is always a great time, keep in mind that this month is about the fight for #equality, justice, and the right to be who you are. Let's embrace this spirit of diversity and inclusion during Pride Month and beyond. Because when we do, we create spaces where we can all be free to live authentically and thrive. Because love is love, is love, is love. Happy Pride! 🌈

As Pride Month concludes, this recent article from Kevin Bolduc and and Elizabeth Kelley Sohn highlights critical issues in LGBTQ+ philanthropy: Center for Effective Philanthropy's research reveals LGBTQ+ grantees have less positive experiences with funders compared to their peers. Key findings include: 📊 Only 11% of surveyed grantees identify as LGBTQ+ 📊 LGBTQ+ grantees report lower ratings for funders' understanding of their work and contexts 📊 LGBTQ+ grantees have less positive relationships with funders YouthTruth, an initiative of Center for Effective Philanthropy, agrees that as philanthropists and leaders, we must step up to counter regressive movements and ensure LGBTQ+ individuals are seen, safe, and supported in all aspects of society. 🌈LONDON PRIDE is on June 29, 2024.🌈 Did you know that over 1.5 million people took to the streets of London to cheer on the parade last year? In 1972, at the first London Pride, around 1000 people turned up to protest and marched down Oxford Street. 🎤Pride is a parade, it is a party but still a protest. ➡️Corporate businesses have floats with their LGBTQIA+ ERG network, waving flags and celebrating the inclusive culture of those businesses. This is wonderful, and we need visualisation and representation of organisations that allow their employees to bring their whole selves to work. ➡️With the gratitude the Queer community have, there are a few questions or things to be mindful of. ➡️When you look around your float, is it predominantly CIS white middle-class gay men, or do you see other representation? Are there any Black queer people, any of our trans community, Queer and disabled? Are any of the employees over 50 years of age? If not, you still have work to do before celebrating. ➡️Are any of your senior leadership team members standing on the float? They do not need to be from our communities, but showing the rest of your workforce that they are an ally is incredibly powerful for driving inclusion. ➡️Have the allies on the float had training on how to be an ally? Changing Hearts & Minds Consulting Ltd can help with this. Performative allies are not really allies; employees on the float should be doing this alongside the other things they do and not having a day out. ➡️There are so many small charities with staff working tirelessly for little money; invite some of these people to join you on your float wearing their company t-shirts. 🌈Come along and enjoy the day. June is 🌈 Pride Month 🌈 which means a plethora of rainbow-themed packaging designs online and in stores. But while some people view this as a sign of growing support of the LGBTQ+ community, others fear companies are exploiting a social movement for profit. Can packaging be a force for good? Packaging Europe recently investigated the issue in their article 'Packaging in Pride Month: allyship versus ‘rainbow-washing’. Rainbow-washing occurs when brands use Pride to market themselves as socially progressive without taking meaningful action to support the LGBTQ+ community. On the surface, incorporating Pride imagery into packaging may seem harmless. However, critics argue that perceived insincerity can damage a company's reputation more than silence, as contradictions between branding and actions are easier to spot in the digital age. To prove their authenticity, companies need to go beyond aesthetics and actively support equality legislation, LGBTQ+ employees and non-profit organisations. Packaging can be a useful tool in educating consumers and raising funds, but it should not be used to facilitate a token gesture or one-off PR stunt. Successful examples of consumer brands showing LGBTQ+ allyship include Unilever's personal care brands, which have partnered with The Brighton Rainbow Fund and made Pride-themed packaging available year-round. #PrideMonth #Pride #Packaging #Packagingdesign #Rainbowwashing

Have you heard about the 'Be Who You Want To Be' initiative yet? Marking a significant step towards creating an LGBTQ+ friendly village within the town centre, it underscores a commitment to fostering an environment where everyone feels empowered to express their true selves without fear of discrimination or prejudice. It aims to build upon the existing concentration of LGBTQ+ friendly establishments within the BID, particularly in areas such as Queen Street, Springfield Road, Dickson Road, and Lord Street. Rather than confining individuals to a specific neighbourhood, its mantra emphasises the freedom for everyone to embrace their authentic selves. Since the initiative was first unveiled last August, there has been positive changes in attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals. However, there is still work to be done, which is why we are pleased to see the collaboration between the business community, council, arts groups, and other stakeholders in supporting this big step for Blackpool.
