I'm happy to share that my article, co-authored with Emanuela Rondi, Peter Buckley, and Alfredo De Massis, titled “Family Firms and the Governance of Global Value Chains,” is now published in the latest issue of the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS).
It was a long journey (the first time Peter and I first discussed this research idea was at the European International Business Academy (EIBA) conference in December 2019!), but it was definitely worth it. I learned a lot over these years working with my co-authors, and the journal's review process—with invaluable guidance from the Editor and input from three anonymous reviewers—truly helped us improve our study.
Our study challenges internalization theory and the global factory model, which are typically used to explain the governance of Global Value Chains primarily from the perspective of lead MNEs, focusing mainly on principles of economic efficiency. In this paper, we integrate the global factory model with a socioemotional wealth perspective to analyze decisions related to the location of value chain activities and the degree of internalization when the lead MNE is a family firm. Furthermore, we examine how the dyadic relationship between the lead MNE and its partner firm is managed, depending on whether one, the other, or both are family firms.
Our conceptual reflections are presented through propositions and supported with illustrative evidence. Additionally, we examine the boundary conditions that may limit these propositions by analyzing sources of heterogeneity within family firms.
We hope this study will contribute to the ongoing discussion on the significant role of family firms in international business. The full manuscript is available open access at the following link:
