✴️ Is Remote Work coming to an END? ✴️ During my corporate days, I never liked remote, even with a 4 hour daily commute. Pandemic changed that for everyone. As the "new norm", what do all the recent return to work mandates mean for employers and candidates? ✔️ Fewer opportunities will lead to fewer options and greater competition for candidates looking for roles. ✔️ Employers will need to likely hire locally, lessening their ability to attract national talent. ✔️ Increased relocation costs for employers (if it's even available for a role) ✔️ Personal and professional sacrifices in work-life balance. It seems inevitable that more positions will return to the office in the near future. Employers planning for this should also be prepared with a detailed plan of action. This is not just a "turn the light switch on" moment. Consult professionals, listen to your employees and give everyone time to acclimate. #hiring #jobs #opentowork

Candidate: "I will have to decline this offer." It's 2024, Since the pandemic priorities have changed. Family, Culture, and Balance are all important. Individuals no longer want to build their entire lives around their careers. Flexibility is key. Time is more valuable than money. Agree?

🚨 Unpopular Opinion: Remote work should be about flexibility AND fair compensation or am I delusional? This Executive Assistant role reports to a CEO in Florida and is fully remote from South Africa. On the surface, it sounds great: ✅ Work remotely from anywhere in SA. ✅ Skip the commute, gain flexibility. ✅ Get exposure to an international work environment. BUT, here’s the real issue: 💰 R20,000/month for a degree-qualified, experienced professional—is this fair compensation for a mid-level role? 🌍 Global Remote work was supposed to open up opportunities, however might be an avenue to pay less for high-quality talent? This is a complex issue, with no easy answer and a small facet of the larger issues. What are your thoughts?

Is It Time for a New Approach to Talent in Social Housing? I regularly hear from Housing Associations about the struggle to fill full-time, permanent positions. In an industry that's so essential, it's concerning how difficult it has become to find the right talent. We know platforms like LinkedIn are where much of the talent pool is, but is there an untapped opportunity we're missing? Could we benefit from segmenting those who are open to roles that don’t require in-office attendance at all? With more people seeking flexible or remote-only roles, perhaps it’s time to build a repository of talent that’s ready to work—just not from the office. A cautionary tale for all career professionals. If remote work is important to you, make sure the job market will support you wherever you work from home. We are just beginning to collect the data on the impact on careers of the work from home experience. Plan based upon the best path for your career trajectory. Not just the short term.

I'm surprised by the number of people who still think remote means working from anywhere. We are missing a few details here: 📍𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞: You don't need to be physically in a specific place (usually your employer's office) to work. You can do it from home, Starbucks, the park while you feed the birds, or whatever pleases you more. Literally by the dictionary: 𝐔𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬. Now. The kind of contract we have is what determines WHERE we can actually work from: 🏢 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭: Permanent employers are entitled to full employee rights under labor laws, including sick leave, vacation pay, public holidays, and notice periods for termination. And this is directly linked to the need to be based in a specific country. Employers are the ones responsible for providing benefits like health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off. But, to be covered by this kind of service (like social security), you need to be a resident of a specific country or region, especially for health care coverage. 🌍 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭: Contractors are responsible for managing their tax obligations like social security, retirement contributions, and others. They arrange their own healthcare, retirement savings, and insurance coverage. They typically do not receive statutory employee benefits, such as paid leave or health insurance. So, in all, it means they are not really linked to any place in particular. If you are a 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫, you can work from 𝐀𝐍𝐘𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝. If you are a 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞, you can work from anywhere 𝐈𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐘 𝐎𝐑 𝐑𝐄𝐆𝐈𝐎𝐍. Understanding the legal distinctions between permanent and contract roles helps understand why you might live in the US and be rejected in Europe, although your résumé is a killer one. If you want to work from anywhere, what you might be looking for is a contractor position.
