If you want to perform 3D reconstructions, usually you can try taking consecutive pictures and perform structure from motion on them. For real-world, pictures are 3D consistent but what about hand drawn images? University of California, Berkeley and Teton.ai just released "Toon3D: Seeing Cartoons from a New Perspective" which is a method to recover camera poses and dense geometry with piecewise-rigid deformable optimization from non-geometric hand-drawn images. It consists of: 🥇 A monocular depth estimation using Marigold and masking using Segment Anything Model (SAM) 🥈 Using Toon3D Labeler, correspondences are marked 🥉 Camera poses and warp images are optimised to obtain calibrated, perspective cameras. 🍀 A gaussian splatting is obtained through the reconstructed point cloud Check it out! The core idea of this technology is that the scene is represented not as a traditional polygonal mesh, but through a set of 3D Gaussians—small clouds of points with blurred shapes. These Gaussians are layered on top of each other (“splatting”), creating a final image with smooth transitions and details. Here are a few key distinctions: 1. Gaussians instead of polygons: In traditional 3D reconstruction methods, objects are typically represented by polygonal meshes, which can be complex and resource-intensive. 3D Gaussian Splatting uses “blurred points” that are easier to process, especially when rendering large and detailed scenes. 2. Realistic lighting effects: Gaussians allow for better modeling of lighting effects, such as soft shadows and smooth gradients, enhancing the photorealism of the rendered image. 3. Efficiency with complex shapes: This technology excels at handling scenes with many complex and smooth forms. Unlike polygonal meshes, where details can appear “blocky,” Gaussians more naturally capture soft lines and contours of objects. 4. Adaptability to motion: In its advanced version, 4D Gaussian Splatting incorporates the time dimension, enabling it to work with dynamic scenes where objects are moving. This opens the door to real-time rendering of scenes with moving objects while maintaining high image quality. Inspired by Inigo Quilez's post, https://lnkd.in/gGWCpMxp I took a bite into creating this minion with 9 cylinders, 4 spheres, and 2 boxes using Ray marching. 🥁 and the animation using parametric functions with time as input. Ray Marching is a technique for rendering 3d objects onto 2d planes. One of the 3 traditional rendering techniques. 📲Rasterization: Converts 3D models to 2D images by projecting vertices onto the screen, efficient but limited in lighting realism. 💡Ray Tracing: Simulates rays interacting with objects to create realistic lighting and shadows, but computationally intensive. 🏃♂️➡️Ray Marching: Similar to Ray tracing, but it represents the surfaces using SDF(signed distance field), limited in representing complex 3d objects but more efficient than ray tracing ✨ SDF is the distance estimation between some point and a surface, i.e., a sphere can be represented directly by its math formula x^2+y^2+z^2-r^2, the smaller this distance is, the closer we're to the surface of the sphere. Using Union and intersection operations, we can create complex objects and lighting. Adjust the camera (AA) samples, diffuse samples, specular samples, and transmission samples to find the right balance between quality and render time. Start with lower settings and gradually increase them until you achieve the desired quality. 3. Leverage Adaptive Sampling: Arnold's adaptive sampling feature allows for more intelligent sampling, focusing computational power where it's needed most. Enable adaptive sampling to reduce render times without compromising on image quality, especially in areas with less detail or noise. 4. Efficient Use of Lights and Shaders: Minimize the number of light sources and use Arnold’s efficient lights such as the quad light. Simplify shaders by avoiding overly complex shader networks and using Arnold’s standard surface shader. This not only speeds up rendering but also reduces the likelihood of noise and artifacts. 5. Optimize Render Settings: Take advantage of Arnold’s render settings for faster results. Use features like texture compression, light linking, and exclusion to manage resources better. Additionally, employ Arnold’s built-in denoiser to clean up renders at lower sample rates, significantly cutting down render times while maintaining high-quality output.
