Reflecting on My Journey at James Cook University (JCU) As I progress through my Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Banking and Finance at James Cook University, I’m continually amazed by how impactful this journey has been. The teaching quality here stands out — it’s not just about gaining theoretical knowledge but applying it to real-world challenges. Our coursework is designed to foster critical thinking, and the faculty go above and beyond to ensure we are equipped with the latest insights into the evolving world of finance and commerce. One of the highlights of my time here has been the Mentorship Program, which has opened doors to incredible learning opportunities. Being mentored by industry professionals has given me practical insights into the business world, enhanced my decision-making skills, and prepared me for future challenges in a dynamic field. Additionally, the diversity on campus has made a lasting impact. Interacting with peers from different cultures and perspectives has not only broadened my worldview but also cultivated essential skills in collaboration and cross-cultural understanding — qualities that are vital in today’s globalized business environment. Beyond academics, JCU fosters an environment that encourages innovation, networking, and personal growth. It’s been a journey of continuous learning, where every experience, whether in the classroom or beyond, adds immense value to my career development. Looking forward to leveraging these experiences as I continue growing in the field of finance! 🌱📚 #JamesCookUniversity #BankingAndFinance #HigherEducation #MentorshipMatters #GlobalCommunity #DiversityAndInclusion #CareerGrowth #ContinuousLearning

|I work with leaders to drive results and achieve lasting success| |Executive Coach: Partnering with people to achieve their full potential| |Social Protection Advocate: Helping Kenyans to become economically secure|
Last week, thanks to my job, I got to attend KCB Foundation’s Laptop Handover Ceremony to its 2022 University Scholars. I must commend the KCB Foundation for the work that is doing towards sustainable development and alleviation of poverty in this country. I had the benefit of sitting through Michael Murungi's session with the University scholars and I must admit that despite having worked for almost fifteen years, his message deeply resounded with me. Michael Murungi shared with the students that in today’s world, it is not about just having a job, it is about having a mission. That a job just by itself, while it would give financial security, if not aligned with purpose, will not amount to much. He encouraged them to align their future work with their #values and #purpose, the outcome of which will be #meaning, #impact and #personalfulfillment . The concept behind a mission is that one is constantly in a space of reflection, exploration and networking so that they are in a place where one can provide solutions to gaps identified in their realm of influence. We often hear/read of people who have struggled with the meaning of life after a job transition. But with a life mission, while a job may end and undeniably come with a feeling of loss, it is not all lost because one would then begin to slowly tap into one of the other pathways they have developed. A life mission is about optimizing one’s potential and capabilities. I learnt painfully the importance of being purpose-led twelve years into my career. Had I heard what Michael shared just before leaving university, it would have made a whole lot of difference in how I handled my career. This is not to lament. In the words of Maya Angelou, “Do the best you can until you know better. When you know better, you do better.” And that’s my rallying call for today to those of us who are ahead in the career and life journey. Let's #mentor university students and young professionals by sharing our experiences, lessons and insights. This way we can help them navigate the path to purpose and avoid some of the pitfalls we might have unknowingly stumbled into.

..."The sector is underfunded, under resourced, perceived to be undervalued and perhaps even underdefined as it can get confused 'sitting between' schools and universities" - CEO @Educationandtrainingfoundation And the Further Education (FE) sector, that is being referred to here, is the key driver of the new qualification T Levels. In fact the Government goes as far as to say "T Levels are the gold standard vocational course, and a high-quality alternative to A levels". For once I agree with this, for a business qualification setting students and employers up to succeed the T Level Management and Administration has nailed it. So what has gone wrong in FE? I am not even going to attempt to answer that question. All I know as a business leader transitioning into an FE environment it's tough. Having complete loyalty to the qualification I have the pleasure to teach helps! I have been wondering if I can find the energy and focus it takes to stay for another year, and despite everyone around me who hears my daily frustration, to convince me otherwise. I can't leave it. I love the T level and frankly this generation needs us! So wish me luck as I wind down this year and start mentally preparing for September! And remember wherever you are in the country there is an opportunity to support the 40 day industry placement.

former headmistress of Francis Holland School, Sloane Square, now a private educational consultant, executive coach, speaker and mentor
It's uplifting to see so many young people celebrating their GCSE results, but I fully agree with Sir Anthony Seldon's comments in The Times today: "Up to a third, disproportionately those who have had challenging starts to life and with learning difficulties, will not be celebrating, having failed to meet the required standards in Maths and/or English. A high proportion are school refusers who have already decided that schools have nothing to offer them. "What is lacking from our school system is any philosophy of the purpose of school beyond maximisation of exam results that test only a narrow range of human capabilities. Schools are less robust at finding out what all young people can do; at imparting mental resilience and a sense of duty and responsibility; and at encouraging entrepreneurialism and preparing the young for the AI world of the mid-21st century. Above all, we need schools that can give every young person a sense of success and belonging, and optimise their chance of becoming positive and fulfilled members of society." I'm heartened by the story of the Brickie Boys and all those who discover that their worth doesn't lie in exam grades but in learning to use their skills and efforts to make a difference to the world around them. We should support T levels, apprenticeships, and all courses, businesses and institutions giving young people a sense of worth and a future.
