I asked Ian Johnston (road safety legend) about the stagnant progress in road safety over the last decade. His answer: “It’s a failure of IMPLEMENTATION of the Safe System approach.” I spent today with Ian discussing all things road safety. While much of our conversation focused on Safe System infrastructure, vehicles, and speed management, we agreed that our industry possesses the knowledge to make significant gains in road safety. We know how to drastically reduce road trauma. What we need now is to disseminate that information and take action. Key points from Ian: - Our system is antiquated. - There's a lack of accountability. - Performance indicators are unclear or non-existent. Does Ian know what he’s talking about?
