Double Star Observing Program https://lnkd.in/ghZR9ztf Find 100 double and multiple star systems in the night sky to earn a certification and more. “To qualify for the Astronomical League’s Double Star certificate and pin, observe the 100 listed objects. Any telescope may be used, but one with a 60-mm or larger objective is recommended. Star hopping is preferred over “go-to” or “push-to” methods, but we will not insist on this if the rest of the observations are clear, well-documented, and unhurried. Because the equipment requirements for this program are modest, the use of remote telescopes is not allowed.” ~Astronomical League Join Jeff and Pam LIVE on Friday nights at 9pm Pacific time, USA. #astronomy An image captured by the #Hubble Space Telescope depicts the star-forming region cataloged as G35.2-0.7N, in which massive #stars form. #Protostars are surrounded by cocoons of gas and dust which in turn are inside larger clouds, and that usually makes them invisible. However, one of those protostars near the center of the image is emitting jets of materials that illuminate the region and dig into the gas, allowing some of the protostellar light to escape. https://lnkd.in/dqP4peSC

SVOM Mission launches successfully: scientists to study the most distant explosions of stars – Gamma bursts Photonis, part of Exosens is thrilled to announce that the SVOM (Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor) mission has successfully launched into space with our cutting-edge Micro Pore Optics (MPO) detection technology onboard! Photonis Micro Pore Optics (MPO) are found on the MXT Telescope, alongside 3 other mission-critical instruments in the SVOM mission. The MPO’s, coupled with a pnCCD-equipped focal plan camera, will aid in capturing high-resolution images and spectra and will provide valuable insights into origins, composition and behavior of the Gamma bursts. By contributing to this mission, Photonis is helping scientists advance our understanding of the universe and its many wonders! The first known practical telescopes were refracting telescopes with glass lenses and were invented in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 17th century. They were used for both terrestrial applications and astronomy. The reflecting telescope, which uses mirrors to collect and focus light, was invented within a few decades of the first refracting telescope. This is a single 20 second exposure of the Witch Head #Nebula I captured last October which highlights some of the perils of #satellite mega-#constellations for #astronomy. In just 20 seconds, I was photobombed by a flurry of 6 satellites and even an airplane, whose colored lights streak near the top. The 4 satellite trails on the left must be from the same network due to their close proximity, brightness, and direction. As satellites continued streaking across the surrounding exposures, I had to throw out many hours of data, as much as 50% of what I captured. Although global telecommunication promises to help underdeveloped nations, current and future ground-based #observatories such as the Vera Rubin Observatory will contend with increasing contamination from satellites. The situation is worse in #radio astronomy, where radio interference from satellite electronics can appear as bright as the sun! #Astrophotography #space #spacex #starlink
