I would be very interested to hear peoples thoughts on this subject. The Rising Value of Experienced Maritime Security Operators in today job market. In the dynamic landscape of maritime security, the need for highly skilled operators is more crucial than ever. The current HRA is facing unprecedented challenges due to increasing threats from Houthi insurgents, who are deploying drones, missiles, and sea-borne drones, along with the persistent threat from Somali pirates. These complex threats highlight the essential value of experienced maritime security professionals. Their expertise, gained through military service, maritime training and hands-on experience, is indispensable in navigating and mitigating the intricacies of these dangers. The tragic sinking of the MV Tudor serves as a poignant reminder of the severe consequences that arise when the necessary expertise is lacking. This incident underscores the urgent requirement for competent individuals in critical roles. Regrettably, the current wage levels do not accurately reflect the true market value of these experienced operators, resulting in little incentive for them to undertake such risky responsibilities. Consequently, the industry grapples with a significant experience gap, compromising the safety and security of maritime operations. Companies need to acknowledge that investing in top-tier security talent is not merely an operational expense but a strategic necessity. These professionals play a pivotal role in protecting vessels, ensuring the safe transit of goods, and ultimately safeguarding global trade routes. As the industry adapts to this escalated threat environment, the role of seasoned maritime security operators will remain paramount, that being said I would hope the shipping companies would take the steps needed to attract the right talent to the industry. #MaritimeSecurity #HRA #SecurityOperators #GlobalTrade #MaritimeSafety #RiskManagement #ExperiencedProfessionals #SecurityIndustry #TradeRoutes #HouthiThreat #SomaliPirates #MVtudor #MaritimeIndustry #PrimusPilusGlobalLTD

In the past few weeks, the Maritime Security Industry has once again faced another incident where an Armed Security Team (AST) failed to effectively protect the vessel they were assigned to defend. Recently, the MT Cordelia Moon was attacked by Houthi forces. The assault included ballistic missiles, which fortunately missed their target, and a USV strike that inflicted considerable damage on the vessel. By sheer luck, no one was injured. After the incident, Lloyd's List reached out to me for my perspective on the current state of AST quality in the Indian Ocean High-Risk Area (HRA). During our discussion, we addressed a well-known truth across industries: you get what you pay for. The choice between quality and cost is as simple as asking if you prefer a well-prepared meal over a quick snack or a Mercedes over a budget car. Seafarers have endured tremendous hardships over the years, and the threats they face in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden show no sign of letting up. But how often do we consider the conditions under which ASTs live and operate during deployment? Their role is relentless. Unlike mariners, who may transit through these "red zones" once or twice during a contract, Armed Guards spend the entirety of their deployment on high-alert, frequently traversing the “kill zone.” In a recent presentation, I highlighted this difference by explaining that a voyage from Singapore to Rotterdam through the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea exposes a vessel to danger for about four days. But for Armed Guards, their job is a continuous loop, constantly passing through these high-risk areas. Imagine a three-month deployment, with transit times averaging 5-7 days—most of it in hostile waters. They disembark to Vessel Borne Armories (VBAs) in rough seas, only to board the next vessel, often facing substandard living conditions, poor sanitation, and inadequate nutrition. It’s time for our industry to re-evaluate how we treat not only our clients but, more importantly, the Guards who make maritime security possible. We need to start addressing the mental health and well-being of these operators and take meaningful steps toward improving their lives. The work they do is vital, and they deserve better. #maritimesecurity #shipping #houthis #redsea

Security Procedure (SHIP MANAGEMENT) Part 3 HRA A. SHORE BASED SUPPORT GULF OF ADEN 1.Internationally Recognized Transit Corridor (IRTC) Vessels are advised to navigate through the revised UKMTO Transit Corridor which consists of a separate, 5 nm wide, east bound and west bound transit lanes, separated by a 2 nm buffer zone. The coordinates of these two (2) lanes are as follows: (A)East bound lane: It begins at Longitude 045’00”E between Latitudes 11’48”N & 11’53”N, be oriented along a straight line course of 0720(T) and terminate at Longitude 053’00”E between Latitudes 14’18” N & 14’23” N. (B)West bound lane: It begins at Longitude 053’00”E between Latitudes 14’25”N & 14’30”N, be oriented along a course of 2520 (T) and terminate at Longitude 045’00”E between Latitudes 11’55”N & 12’00”N. 2.Maritime Security Transit Corridor (MSTC) The following information from the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) relates to transits through the Gulf of Aden, Bab Al Mandeb (BaM), Southern Red Sea, and associated waters. It does not replace any previous guidance. Recent attacks against merchant shipping in the Gulf of Aden and Bab Al Mandeb have highlighted the risks associated with transiting these waters. The multiple types of risks and the broad expanse of ocean on which these attacks can occur dictate that Naval Forces must be used in the most efficient manner possible. To assist in this, CMF is establishing a Maritime Security Transit Corridor (MSTC). The MSTC will consist of: The Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) The BAM TSS and the TSS West of the Hanish Islands A two‐way route directly connecting the IRTC and the BAM TSS 3.Naval Convoy Some countries offer independent Convoy escorts through the IRTC where Merchant Vessels are escorted by a Warship. Details of the Convoy schedules and how to apply will be sent by the CSO. It should be noted that most National Convoys require prior registration to enable Vessels to join the Convoy. Ships joining National Convoys should note the below issues, as they are also highly relevant to Vessels timing their arrival at a National convoy forming up point. 4.Group Transit the Group Transit system is to group together all vessels (regardless of their speed) around the time of daybreak ensuring that during what is potentially the most vulnerable time of a vessels transit vessels are grouped together. Although, a vessel may see no other ships at the start of her transit, other ships participating in the same transit will converge during the critical stage of the transit. For this reason it is important that a vessel does not stop and wait for other vessels at the entry points and that they maintain the required speed (SOG/GPS) for their group. While participating in a Group Transit, each vessel must employ all possible anti‐piracy security measures and maintain a VHF watch on Ch16 & 8. #Sharingiscarrying #seaman #seafarer #Piracyattack #highriskarea #nautica #pelautindonesia #deck #engine

✈️ SAFETY vs SECURITY: Do you know the difference? ✈️ 🦺 SAFETY refers to the protection against unintentional harm, accidents, or incidents. It ensures the well-being of passengers and crew. Examples include rigorous maintenance checks, crew training programs, adherence to operational procedures and weather monitoring. 👮♂️ SECURITY, on the other hand, deals with protection against intentional harm, threats, or malicious acts. Examples could include hijackings, sabotage, terrorist attacks or unauthorised access to restricted areas. Security involves procedures like passenger and baggage screening, access controls to sensitive areas, and implementation of security protocols. Example: Safety ensures the aircraft is mechanically sound and operated by well-trained crew, while security prevents unauthorised access to the cockpit, ensuring the safety of everyone onboard. Be honest, did you already know the difference? #SafetyVsSecurity #aviationenglish #icaoelp #aviationenglishteacher #aviationenglishlessons #aviationenglishonline #elpexam
