At the end of a recent NVIDIA blog (https://lnkd.in/eYmbfNa7), in which CEO Jensen Huang talks about how every country needs "sovereign AI", there's a sardonic comment posted by one reader that says: "Every country needs to buy our GPUs." While such wry reactions are to be expected given some of the PR-style hype in the blog, it would be too cynical to interpret Huang's message as mere marketing. The central idea behind the description of "sovereign AI" as something that "emphasises a country’s ownership over its data and the intelligence it produces" is a cornerstone of digital sovereignty. However, "sovereign AI" cannot exist in a vacuum. IDC Europe research reveals that most organisations that are using cloud to build their AI workloads are actually using a sovereign cloud - and that requires sovereignty across the IT stack, encompassing not just data sovereignty, but also technical sovereignty and operational sovereignty. Rather like cybersecurity, the digtal sovereignty ecosystem is only as good as its weakest link.
