Like other agencies, Wallara is proud to be offering customised employment to help some supported employees move into open employment. The video tells our journey in this space. However , our success and joy in this work doesn’t change the fact that we are working for 20,000 people in supported employment who receive pro rata wages decided as fair by the Fair Work Commission in addition to their Disability Support Pension. Some of this workforce will be able to find jobs in Open Employment and we should be encouraging all to try for it, but the international data tells us all very clearly it will not be possible for most who have jobs they truly value now. So as we move forward in this space I hope we never lose sight of this. Wallara wants as many people with disability in sustainable work as possible -not just those who can meet an open employment bar -and the social wage is the solution. #NDEAM 2024 National Disability Employment Awareness Month is here! Idea #4: Train supervisors! Supervisors are the individuals closest to an organization's workforce. As part of NDEAM, consider conducting training to ensure they understand their role in fostering an inclusive workplace culture. Such training may include a review of relevant policies, including the process for providing reasonable accommodations.
