On the way to his second Tour de France victory last year, Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard was facing tough questions regarding his pace before he even arrived in Paris. How was he going so fast? How was it possible to be over seven minutes ahead of a cyclist of Tadej Pogačar's caliber? Some reporters even explicitly asked: "Are you cheating?". In 2023, Vingegaard completed the grueling 3-week, 3,401 kilometer competition at an average speed of 41.4 km/h (25.574 mph). Given cycling's deservedly bad reputation, it is perhaps understandable that exceptional performances like that still raise suspicions. As Statista's Felix Richter shows in the chart below, the Tour de France has not slowed down since the doping-infested years of the early 2000s. Whether that's due to super-fast carbon bikes, favorable routing or the use of performance-enhancing substances is a question the sport is not yet fully able to answer.

What's the similarity between trial biking and the one-inch punch? Is there any similarity? I believe so. I have always enjoyed watching trial bike events on TV (check the clip, not to be mistaken with trail biking). It's fascinating to watch riders mix slow and fast on their motorcycles with exceptional balance and control, to go through courses that can simply be described as crazy. And then there's the unbelievably fascinating one-inch punch that Bruce Lee made famous. Where, a person with their fist at anywhere between 0 and 6 inches from an object, can break it. You might have seen clips of people breaking bricks with a punch that starts really close to the object. [check this one: https://lnkd.in/geviYNZv] How that is different from a regular punch is, a regular punch has the distance of the swing of the arm to build momentum and force. Picture something like Marvel's Juggernaut who just runs through walls without stopping. In contrast, the beauty of trial biking and the one-inch punch is how practitioners channel an almost exact amount of strength or power or speed and not much more. Which means they can jump to higher ground, or break bricks, but the bike or the arm does not swing much more than that. A perfect blend of excess and restraint. I wonder if #Superleague passed through the minds of the UCI when adopting these measures on the first of march, and especially the following measure: “From now on, riders – men and woman – in the top 20 of the latest UCI Elite Cyclo-cros Ranking will no longer be able to take part in national events.” (cfr. https://lnkd.in/ef9TPVXq)   Looking at Superleague I can imagine the CJEU finding with regard to the UCI and this measure, that: “Article 101(1) TFEU must be interpreted as meaning that the adoption and implementation … of rules by associations which are responsible for CYCLO-CROSS at world and European levels and which pursue in parallel various economic activities related to the organisation of competitions, REFUSING PARTICIPATION IN COMPETITIONS ORGANISED BY THIRD-PARTY UNDERTAKINGS, on European Union territory, and controlling the participation of professional CYCLO-CROSS TEAMS and RIDERS in such competitions … where there is NO FRAMEWORK for those various powers providing for substantive criteria and detailed procedural rules suitable for ensuring that they are transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and PROPORTIONATE, constitutes a decision by an association of undertakings having as its object the prevention of competition.” (cfr. CJEU’s findings under paragraph 258 in superleague concerning article 101(1) https://lnkd.in/eUJ7fNzg)   The UCI having a framework in place that ticks all the other boxes mentioned by the CJEU is not something I’d bet my money on. Furthermore I am quite opposed to the idea that the UCI makes use of its powers in a proportionate way.   Organisers of national events already face difficulties when ‘the big three’ are not at the start line. Refusing participation to the whole top 20 of the UCI elite cyclo-cross ranking - both men and woman – could very well, as somebody pointed out in the Sporza comment section, ‘cost the organisers of national events their heads’.   The UCI should be careful not to kill off a sport in its roots by ambitioning a flower whose blossoming is uncertain. #superleague #CJEU #UCI #Cyclocross

New Madrid Street Circuit Will Host Spanish F1 GP Starting 2026: The new venue casts doubt on the future of the Catalunya circuit, which could drop off the calendar or possibly stay as a second race in Spain. Come 2026, the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix will be hosted in the Spanish capital of Madrid, at a new hybrid race track made up of street and non-street sections. The future of the current host, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where the Spanish Grand Prix has been held since 1991, is currently unknown. The hybrid venue—which is still pending FIA approval—will measure 3.39 miles and feature 20 corners. Judging by the provisional map provided by F1, it's a considerable improvement over recent street circuits. That said, the 2D layout doesn't give us an idea of the width, elevation changes, or other factors that affect on-track action. F1 estimates a qualifying lap time of 1:32 minutes. The new venue is said to have a 10-year contract, with race promoters promising to take advantage of the expansive IFEMA exhibition center grounds to make the Madrid GP one of the largest venues on the calendar, hosting up to 140,000 fans per day during a race weekend. Did you know that? 👇 A Mexican by name of Enrique Corcuera is believed to be the founder of padel - by accident 😁 How did he came up with the idea? Well, Corcuera built a court to play tennis at his home in Acapulco in the late 1960s. Not long after, he found that if tennis balls were overhit, which was the case most of the time, they would go all over the place and into neighbouring houses. To prevent this from happening, Corcuera figured, why not surround the court with fences on all sides 💡 However, with these adjustments in place, he still faced some problems as normal tennis rackets generated too much power for the small court 💥 Corcuera and his friends eventually exchanged their tennis rackets for a wooden beach paddle bat. Later, a rulebook evolved, which allowed the players to play off walls, and the rest is history! Fast forward to 2024 where padel has become one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide. What was the economic impact of Italy hosting The Ryder Cup in 2023? The answer is €262 million making it the most successful Ryder Cup played outside the US. The move away from the UK as the default venue for Ryder Cups in Europe has proven to be a successful gamble. Following France's hosting of the 2018 edition at Golf National, the Marco Simone Country Club hosted the biggest Ryder Cup to date, and the figures indicate just how economically successful the event was. The economic research was carried out by the Sports Industry Research Centre, Sheffield Hallam University.
