It's no secret that the SEND system in the UK has been facing significant challenges for some time now. Keegan, the children's commissioner for England, recently admitted that the system isn't working well "for anybody." This acknowledgment highlights the urgency of addressing the issues within the SEND system and finding solutions that will support the needs of all children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. As experienced recruiters and professionals in the education sector, it's crucial for us to advocate for improvements within the SEND system. We need to work collaboratively with the government, educational institutions, and other relevant stakeholders to address the existing challenges and ensure that every child has access to the support they need to thrive in their learning journey. It's essential to prioritize the well-being and educational outcomes of children with SEND and implement reforms that will lead to a more effective and inclusive system. Let's continue to raise awareness, share insights, and support initiatives aimed at improving the SEND system. It's a day that reminds us of the grim reality that many children face worldwide, being forced into work instead of enjoying their childhood and accessing education. By raising awareness and advocating for the rights of these children, we can work towards creating a safer and more equitable world for all children. It's a collective effort that involves governments, organizations, communities, and individuals to address the root causes of child labour and provide support systems for affected children and families. We stand in solidarity against the injustice of child labour, a reality depriving millions of children of their innocence, education, and basic rights. CYCJ welcomes the review of temporary justice measures in the Coronavirus (Recovery and Reform) (Scotland) Act 2022. While the pandemic's impact lingers, social and economic inequalities still affect access to justice for children and young people. We advocate for overcoming digital barriers to ensure meaningful participation and believe early intervention and diversion are better than fiscal fines. Celebrating 100 years of child rights! 🙌 This week we'll highlight five key ways children’s lives have improved since 1924. While significant progress has been made, we must also address current trends that threaten to reverse these hard-won rights. 3️⃣ The third way children's lives have improved: The Majority of Children Are Not Required to Work! 🌟 A century ago, most children were expected to contribute to their family’s income, often working on farms, in factories, or mines. Today, around nine in ten children are not engaged in child labour, which is defined as work that disrupts their physical and mental development and hinders their education. With the adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goal to end child labour by 2025, the international community has made a crucial commitment. However, the International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that 160 million children worldwide are still working—many in hazardous conditions that threaten their health and safety. Urgent Call for Local Government Empowerment in Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) The Local Government Association (LGA) has urgently called upon the Government to expedite legislation that would grant councils the authority to spearhead local ‘SEND systems’. This plea is made in light of an impending Commons debate on SEND provision and funding scheduled for Thursday, 11th January. Councils have voiced concerns regarding previous reforms implemented in accordance with the Children and Families Act 2014, asserting that these reforms have fallen short of their objective to enhance provisions for children and young people with SEND. The LGA contends that these reforms lacked the necessary powers and funding to enable councils to adequately meet the needs of SEND children or hold health and education partners accountable for their contributions to local SEND systems. In proposing a path forward, the Association recommends that the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) take on the role of coordinating capacity issues affecting children's social care, SEND, and early years across the Government. Furthermore, it suggests that the Government utilise the SEND improvement plan to acknowledge the intricate relationship between special educational needs, emotional well-being, and mental health. The LGA also advocates for the establishment of mental health support teams within schools and increased investment in community-based mental health support for children unable to access school-based mental health services. Councils caution that the current proposals fall short in addressing the escalating demand for mental health support and do not sufficiently cater to the specific requirements of children with special educational needs. Demand for Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) continues to surge annually, with a 9% increase from 2022, resulting in 517,000 children and young people currently holding EHCPs. On this matter, the LGA expresses scepticism that the Government's SEND and Alternative Provision improvement plan will lead to a slowdown or halt in this increase.
