Marking a Year of Growth and Learning This week marks the completion of my first year at Amtrak, a year filled with growth and new experiences. My past career has taken me to projects worldwide, but I often felt disconnected from the local communities I served. Over time, I’ve realized that our work is deeply tied to local contexts. Success depends on building relationships and understanding each area’s unique needs. Sharing these experiences might resonate with others who value embracing change and new opportunities. One piece of advice that has guided me throughout this journey came from a former supervisor, who committed to attending one professional event every week for over twenty years. His dedication showed me the value of engaging with new ideas and people. With this mindset, I entered design management at Amtrak, where I’ve had the chance to learn and grow in new ways. Over the past year, my role at Amtrak has allowed me to collaborate with some of the field's most talented leaders and experts. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside colleagues who bring extensive experience and have worked on high-profile projects, which has shaped my understanding of collaboration for success and how design impacts spaces. How I’ve Learned and Grown Beyond Work: 1. Inspiration from the Design Better Podcast: Since 2021, this podcast, thanks to insights from leaders across industries, has consistently inspired me to think differently about design, collaboration, and innovation. 2. Support from DBIA and SAME: The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) community and the SAME DC Post have been critical resources for learning about regulations and project standards, ensuring that my work aligns with industry best practices. 3. Insights from ULI: Through the ULI Washington TAP Committee and the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Council, I’ve gained valuable insights into our region's local urban development and economic challenges. By volunteering alongside community leaders and local experts, I have contributed to practical approaches that support sustainable urban growth and address economic concerns in our communities. 4. Understanding Legal and Risk Management: Attending legal and risk seminars has strengthened my ability to navigate federal regulations and contracting, ensure compliance, and reduce risks on large projects. 5. Gaining Knowledge through APT: Engaging with The Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) has deepened my understanding of historic preservation and how to balance modern development with respect for history. 6. Building Networks: LinkedIn has been invaluable for connecting with professionals from different regions. Learning how others approach large building projects has broadened my perspective on development and design. If you're looking for opportunities to grow, I hope these experiences provide some encouragement and fresh perspective for your own path. #GrowthMindset #LearningJourney

✨Employee Spotlight: Calvin Brown Today we're shining the spotlight on Calvin Brown, our Project Manager of Analytics and Integration. Calvin has been an integral part of the UMS family for 8 years, previously serving as Systems Integration Specialist and Manager before stepping into his current role two years ago. Calvin has lent his expertise to numerous projects, but he's particularly proud of his work on the City of Miami Beach and City of Ocala, FL integrations. His philosophy? "All projects, from small to large, demand the same attention. I strive for everyone I work with to know that we have their back throughout the project lifecycle." When he's not ensuring smooth project integrations, Calvin dreams of visiting Italy with his family. An avid angler 🎣, he's currently diving into the world of saltwater fishing and is excited about his upcoming fishing kayak purchase. "My 9-year-old daughter enjoys fishing as well," Calvin shares with a smile, "so maybe I'll let her tag along." Calvin's first job was at Chick-fil-A, but he's found his professional home at UMS. His favorite thing about working here? "I'm sure everyone says this, but it's the people. UMS is one of the only jobs I've had where everyone is truly family. Everyone looks out for each other in times of need and is willing to jump in and assist whenever needed. That makes a successful team and company, and I am blessed to be a part of this company and their growth." With his dedication to excellence, team spirit, and passion for both work and play, Calvin embodies the values that make UMS special. Next time you see him, be sure to ask about his latest catch! #employeespotlight #employeerecognition #ums #umswater #tapintoums #utilitymetering #amisolutions #advancedmetering #projectmanagement #utilitymanagement

Yesterday marked my fifth anniversary working on the Burnaby Mountain Gondola project. Here are a few key things that I have learned: 1. There are always political dynamics that arise that make the project work more challenging, but that these moments can also bring unexpected benefits so it’s important to be a gleaner not just a practitioner. 2. Project success evolves over time and the outcome of this is not tied to your self worth or the good work you have done. 3. It takes bravery to take on these high profile projects, but also humility and the ability to adapt. 4. Things won’t work out according to plan/schedule/budget but strive to do work that you can be proud of and carry this success with you as you develop in this role and leverage it for your professional growth. 5. Grow people up and learn from others that have gone before you - we were all there or will arrive there sometime. Thanks for being part of this journey: Ian Fisher Matt Craig Rex Hodgson, AICP Stuart Ramsey G. James Meschino Marisa Espinosa Sarah Ross Shezana Hassko Gordon Zhou, MBA, D.Eng. And I just know that one day my idea of a *real* gondola garland will come true! 🤩
