TODAY UNIQUE VEHICLE   VW Beetle 1971 •            Make: Volkswagen •            Model: Beetle •            Colour: Yellow •            Year: 1971   The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most significant cars of all time. In the mid-1930s it was known as an affordable car for the people ('Volks' is German for people, 'wagen' means car) it later became a best seller worldwide.   Though the first Beetles came here in 1954, you are better looking at models from 1957 onwards. Other significant improvements were made in 1963, 1967, 1971 and 1973, with the early, somewhat primitive handling being replaced by a better system in the 1967 model.   VW Beetle engine sizes began at 1.1 litres, went up to 1.2 litres in 1953, 1.3 in 1966 and 1.5 in 1968. The 1.3 made a comeback as a low-cost option in 1970, selling alongside the 1.5. Porsche came up with three prototypes, and Hitler picked a rear-engine, air-cooled, four-cylinder that could drive up to 60 miles per hour and operate in all types of weather. The new car was popular in Germany, but then Hitler started World War II and domestic auto production was shut down. After the war, the car made a comeback, and in 1949, began exports to the United States. It wasn’t an instant hit, as postwar America wasn’t thinking small—automobiles were getting bigger, with more powerful engines. But by the mid 1950s, the odd little German car had found a home in the American counterculture. As of 1972, 15 million had been sold worldwide. By 1985 the German car was being built exclusively…in Mexico. In 1998 it was redesigned for its next generation. But this model didn’t fit in with the parent company’s plans to be a more “full service, family-friendly” automaker, so production began to decline. Early in the 21st century, the cars were being built at a single factory, in Puebla, Mexico. On July 10, 2019, a “denim blue” model rolled off the line in Puebla. It was the last of its kind. From its bizarre beginning as a brutal dictator’s dream, to its long life as a cultural icon, this “people’s car”—or Volkswagen, in the original German—had made its mark on the world. Now, let’s take it up a notch. Imagine not just one, but 30 Formula 1 cars, all speeding down the track. First, we need to clear the highway to make room for these high-speed performers. Here’s the deal: To scale execution across multiple projects, we need to clear the highway - This might be the hardest step! This means stopping, cancelling, defunding or pausing existing work! This creates the space to maneuver and adapt and cuts down on the need for excessive infrastructure and governance. With a clear highway, you can decide which cars (work) will resume Each car has a dedicated driver (Can you imagine telling a driver to pilot multiple cars in a race 🤣) You can then match the number of drivers (teams) To the number of cars (priorities) And, of course, the capacity of the highway Although this is rarely a factor since most companies Built enough capacity for too many cars (too much work) already. Let’s get to the point, here is what you need to do: 1. Clear the Road: Ditch the unnecessary work and projects clogging your workflow. 2. Control On-Ramps: Manage the intake of new work better, ensuring only high-priority work enters the flow. 3. Limit Concurrent Work: Keep the right flow by limiting high-priority work to match your capacity.  Don't start new until something is finished! 4. Streamline Processes: Standardize workflows to reduce variability and boost predictability. 5. Create Dedicated Teams: Ensure each team has the skills to complete work without relying on others. 6. Protect Your Teams: Shield your teams from distractions—often from you, the leader. Create the environment they need to focus and execute. Imagine a clear highway with well-controlled on-ramps. Each Formula 1 car, representing high-priority work, has room to accelerate and maneuver without obstacles. Now, you’ve got 30 high-speed performers, each racing towards their finish lines. This isn’t just about getting things done faster; it’s about creating an environment where teams are aligned to a purpose where both people and products thrive. The last plant of BMW I visited in Germany was in Spandau, Berlin. This was different from BMW Munich and Leipzig. For one, it makes motorbikes, not cars. But its performance was also not as stellar as the best of (German) benchmark plants Leipzig and Munich. But despite some issues, it still performed on an equal level with German car plants.
