Make the hiring process easier on yourself with this one question. Will you hire for skillsets you can train for? Or skillsets you can't? The real life how to... I worked with an organization for years that hired people to do written financial analysis they then shared with the public. Those analysts needed to understand finance and investments but also needed to be able to write coherently and without a bunch of technical jargon. So who did this organization hire? Did they hire finance grads or MBAs? No, they hired liberal arts majors, people who'd studied literature, music, etc. They hired people who knew how to write and 👉 then they taught them to how to write about investments. Things like attention to details, an affinity for data and number crunching, communication or writing - those can be hard to train for. As for values or personality fit... impossible. Back in college, I converted an interview for the position of financial analyst for a reputed company (won’t take name). So what about it? Nothing much, just that: 1. I was pursuing bachelors in chemistry. 2. I had no clue & skills about the role. I just went and sat for placements. Then how did I pull this off? Conviction. In that round, quite expectedly, I was asked why I should be hired if I came from a different field having no skills or exposure for the role as required? My answer was “because I figure it out.” I have done things in college I never knew, yet I learned & executed them enough to be considered capable for this interview. Hence it might take some time but I will figure it out. And that was it. This answer came out naturally from me that day. After that call I said to myself - that was one good way to ruin an opportunity & mess things up. But it came out the other way (although I was unable to continue because of some reasons). I wouldn’t recommend anyone doing the same today in 2024, and might even go one step further to say that such a feat would be stupid and plain useless. But there was one thing I learned that day. 100% faith in conviction + some evidence of capability can help you at the right time in the right place. Moreover, the only consequence of off-duty chemical substance abuse is that the employee will be sent for a JFE. Here, Butler was sent for a JFE on December 16, 2014 tested negative for drugs and alcohol.
