Last week the Australian Government released its National Battery Strategy, outlining its plan of action to build a domestic battery industry. The strategy focuses on developing processing capacity to upgrade raw minerals into processed battery components, allowing Australia to provide battery active materials to the world. 🔋🌏 "The global demand for batteries is set to quadruple by 2030 as the world transitions to net zero," Minister for Industry and Science, Hon Ed Husic MP writes. "Australia is already a leading producer of battery minerals, providing ~45% of the world’s lithium in 2023. While we mine critical minerals here, we currently make less than 1% of global battery materials or components. The global energy transition to renewables presents a significant opportunity for Australia to expand our economy, industry and manufacturing capabilities." Funding for the strategy is covered in the 2024–2025 Federal Budget, including A$523.2m for the Battery Breakthrough Initiative that provides production incentives to promote the development of battery manufacturing capabilities.

Our MD & CEO Cris Moreno, took centre stage with industry peers at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence Giga Europe 2024 this week. The panel, titled "European lithium resources and projects in development", addressed hot topics around current supply and its outlook, staying competitive for the long term and breaking the black box of refining capacity. "We must stand on our own two feet", a key takeaway. As Europe charts its path towards a carbon-neutral future; the need for domestic lithium extraction and production emerges as a crucial imperative. Lithium plays a pivotal role in developing technologies, particularly in producing lithium batteries, which power electric vehicles. Fostering a domestic supply chain from extraction to lithium production will bolster Europe's lithium security and mitigate risks associated with fluctuating global markets.  Vulcan Energy Resources is doing just this. The clean energy transition has raised concerns about a scarcity of minerals as the electric system shifts from fuel-intensive to material-intensive technologies. But while supply and demand for key minerals—such as copper, lithium, and cobalt—may fluctuate, EPRI’s latest report outlines why a long-term shortage of these mineral resources is unlikely. 📈 The new report, “Critical Minerals for the Clean Energy Transition: Supply, Demand, and Impacts,“ provides a comprehensive look at the complexities of mineral availability. Ultimately, the report finds the biggest challenges facing wind, solar, and battery-powered systems are not shortages of required mineral reserves, but factors such as mining development, market lag, government policies, and financing. But even as short-term supply fluctuations may occur, ongoing investments and innovations towards #decarbonization reflect an ability to meet the long-term needs of our energy transition. "Looming shortage of critical minerals by 2027" The U.S. Energy Department announced Thursday preliminary approval for nearly $710 million in loans to advance electric vehicle (EV) technology manufacturing ventures, as part of a broader effort to bolster clean energy projects. Notably, the Biden administration still retains $221.8 billion in loan capacity dedicated to supporting such initiatives. Jigar Shah, the director of the energy department's loan program office, drew attention to China's dominant position in supplying these critical minerals, resulting in a market oversupply and subsequent price decline. Nevertheless, he highlighted the insights of government advisers, who foresee a looming shortage of critical minerals by 2027, underscoring the importance of strategic investments in this sector to ensure future sustainability and independence.
