Passionate about Sustainable Packaging, design and communication | Be the change that you wish to see in the world
A great link to a demo I attended the other day hosted by the great people at Neptune Nanotechnologies Inc. Here are some things I learned. Chitin nanocrystals offer several potential benefits for the paper and pulp packaging industry: Enhanced Mechanical Properties: Chitin nanocrystals can be incorporated into paper and pulp products to improve their mechanical strength and durability. This enhancement can lead to packaging materials that are more resistant to tearing, puncturing, and other forms of damage during handling and transportation. Barrier Properties: Chitin nanocrystals can form a barrier against gases and liquids, which can help to improve the moisture resistance and shelf life of packaged products. This barrier can prevent the ingress of water vapor, oils, and other substances that may degrade the quality of the packaged goods. Biodegradability: Chitin, the precursor to chitin nanocrystals, is a naturally occurring polymer found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans and insects, as well as in fungal cell walls. As a result, chitin nanocrystals derived from renewable sources offer an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic additives in paper and pulp packaging. These materials can be biodegraded by microorganisms after use, reducing environmental pollution and waste. Renewable and Sustainable: Chitin can be extracted from various waste streams in the seafood and agricultural industries, such as shrimp shells, crab shells, and fungal biomass. Utilizing these waste materials to produce chitin nanocrystals provides a sustainable and cost-effective source of raw materials for the paper and pulp packaging industry. Improved Printability and Surface Properties: Incorporating chitin nanocrystals into paper and pulp formulations can improve the surface smoothness and printability of packaging materials. This enhancement allows for better print quality, ink adhesion, and graphics reproduction, which are important for branding and marketing purposes. Reduced Environmental Impact: By replacing synthetic additives with chitin nanocrystals, the paper and pulp packaging industry can reduce its reliance on petroleum-based products and minimize its environmental footprint. Additionally, the biodegradability of chitin-based materials can help to mitigate the accumulation of non-biodegradable waste in landfills and marine environments. Check them out and check out their video. Also they are a local company which makes it even better in my eyes.

Great to see this technology making it's way into the market. I remember researching Graphene Oxide for a couple projects years ago in college (and those who worked with me knew how obsessed I was with GO!), so it's really neat to see how far it's come. There's always been a lot of buzz around Graphene and it's derivatives for various applications, so let's see how it does out there in the real world!
