Preparing to Volunteer: Understanding Your Role and Expectations (Part 1 ) Volunteering can be a rewarding work readiness training experience. It can offer you the chance to make a real difference while developing your skills and expanding your network. However, to truly maximize your personal career growth, it is crucial to start by understanding your role and the placement organization’s expectations. One way to start your journey towards building work experience through volunteering starts with having a good placement description (job description) with a placement title (job title). These should help clarify what specifically you are expected to do in your role and ultimately make it easy for you to find a related job when your placement ends. Before you commit to a volunteer opportunity, thoroughly read the placement description. The standard placement description should clearly state: the title purpose of the role your expected responsibilities specific place of assignment who will be supervising you duration available support work conditions among others This document is your blueprint, outlining the tasks you'll be responsible for, the skills required, and the overall objectives of your role. It provides insight into what the organization needs from you and helps you assess whether your abilities, aspirations and interests align with their mission. Pay attention to the specifics: Are you expected to work independently or as part of a team? Will you need to learn new skills or use your existing ones in a different way? What resources will you be provided with to get the tasks done? Stay tuned for Part 2, where we will dive into understanding the reporting line. Knowing who you’ll be reporting to and who you can turn to for opportunities and help as a volunteer.

E-Governance training bagged! ----------------------------------------------- I got to first know about the concept of E-Governance when I was looking for avenues to volunteer in order to gain some international volunteering exposures. This led me to the UNV website which is the United Nation's Volunteer website which had several volunteering opportunities. The available opportunity that caught my attention was Research Volunteering for the UN's E-Governance Survey. It was intriguing for me so I volunteered. This was way back in 2016/2017. I was lucky and got selected, got series of training on how the survey works. That was my introduction to E-Governance. Fast forward to 2019 when I decided to start the now almighty civil society (NGO) E-Governance and Internet Governance Foundation for Africa (EGIGFA), I just knew it was right to have something to do with E-Governance and it was the best decision. This is because e-governance is still one of the gray areas most people are not into. This places EGIGFA at a good level to make our own contributions to the development of Africa's E-Governance strategies. It was an excitement opportunity for me when the International Telecommunication Union together with TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology selected me and some of my team EGIGFA colleagues to participate in their very intensive one training on E-Governance. My other colleagues are Lavish Mawuena Mensah, Abraham Fiifi Selby, Jacob Odame-Baiden, and Godsway Kubi. We also have Faiza Seidu-Adam who is one of our Fellows from the Ghana School on Internet Governance (GhanaSIG) to join us. From this E-Governance training, I got more understanding on this concept, and specifically on the below: 1. how the public sector implements different e-governance-related systems/solutions and applies digital service orientation; 2. the main building blocks for identity management in the digital world; 3. security and legal frameworks relate to e-governance; 4. things to be considered while designing environments for the public services; 5. main concepts of interoperability and digital data exchange. As part of the training, we were put into groups to develop an e-governance project/product, and my group worked on Accessing Healthcare Digitally. I am grateful to the ITU and TalTech for the training. Oh, before I forgot, because my team EGIGFA members and I could not get funding, we could not join our colleagues who participated in the training at the TalTech campus, which included site visits. I am therefore, looking for funding opportunities that my team could explore to help us attend very essential trainings like this that are helpful for our activities as an E-Governance advocacy civil society. #EGIGFA #EGovernance #ITUAcademy #TALTECH #ITU #Funding
