The gap between developing and developed markets in the pace of transportation electrification is so compressed at this point that it is basically non-existent. RMI's team in India has been working with the India Ports Association on trucking electrification. On Friday at an event we put on with IPA, leadership from JNPA - a leading container port in the country - announced plans to electrify port trucking. 6,500 heavy trucks will become electric. I think that is more than we currently have on the road in all of the US. The moral of story for me is that the level of global ambition and interest in this topic is sky high and helping folks like JNPA navigate the inevitable challenges associated with these large scale deployments is critical. With such a high profile move, success must be unquestioned, highly visible, and rapidly transferable.

The race to clean up heavy-duty trucks Truckers rely on semi-trucks for long-distance transportation under intense time pressure, but diesel engines emit harmful greenhouse gases and nitrogen oxide. Cleaning up the trucking industry, particularly for the largest trucks, is challenging. Range Energy, a startup, is addressing this by adding batteries to semi-truck trailers, enhancing fuel economy for diesel trucks and boosting range and efficiency for electric or hydrogen vehicles. While electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining traction, the high cost, weight, and range limitations of battery-powered trucks pose significant challenges. Despite potential cost parity by 2030 due to lower operating expenses, infrastructure upgrades and powerful chargers are necessary. 🚛 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝘆-𝗱𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗮! 🔋 Nearly 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 (𝟰𝟴%) of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in China’s heavy-duty truck market are now using 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘄𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 tech. And swapping out a battery only takes about five minutes, which is almost as fast as refuelling a diesel truck. This is a serious game-changer for the industry even if conditions are not similar in other parts of the world.
