The race to clean up heavy-duty trucks
Truckers rely on semi-trucks for long-distance transportation under intense time pressure, but diesel engines emit harmful greenhouse gases and nitrogen oxide. Cleaning up the trucking industry, particularly for the largest trucks, is challenging. Range Energy, a startup, is addressing this by adding batteries to semi-truck trailers, enhancing fuel economy for diesel trucks and boosting range and efficiency for electric or hydrogen vehicles. While electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining traction, the high cost, weight, and range limitations of battery-powered trucks pose significant challenges. Despite potential cost parity by 2030 due to lower operating expenses, infrastructure upgrades and powerful chargers are necessary. Some experts advocate keeping options open for future technologies, including hydrogen, to tackle the decarbonization of heavy-duty trucking effectively.
