I am proud that two European cities, Venice in Italy and York in the UK, made it to the global shortlist of 10 cities that are still in the running to receive up to $3m in funding to host a mobility city challenge! 📢 Earlier this year the Toyota Mobility Foundation launched its Sustainable Cities Challenge to help cities move more safely, inclusively and sustainably. The challenge aims to bring cities and innovators together in the field of sustainable mobility to build more resilient and data driven, connected transport ecosystems and ultimately reduce carbon. 💦 Venice (visited ✔️- who hasn't?), world-renowned for its unique geography requires an integrated transportation solution that works across both land and water. 🌳 York (on my list of go-to-places ✔️), marked by a mix of its Viking and Roman inspired past and hi-tech is looking to combine its fragmented modes of public, shared and private transportation into a single, more cohesive solution. Two very different cities that both face mobility challenges that Toyota wants to help tackle by pioneering solutions that cater to the ever-growing need for sustainable urban mobility. Can we solve complex problems like traffic and sustainability by taking something away? On my recent trip to Copenhagen, I was reminded of a 2021 study, "People systematically overlook subtractive changes". The study established that we (humans) are wired to find additive solutions - adding something to solve a problem has a sort of "privilege" status which comes to us more quickly and easily. However, many complex problems will get more complicated when adding a "fix". While roaming around Copenhagen, I was amazed by the volume of bikes (I ❤️ 🚴) and bike lanes. Despite the complex city layout that is surrounded by waterways, there seems to be low traffic. By reducing car lanes, bikes become a more attractive choice with a bonus side effect of sustainability🌲. Remember when we hit our milestone of 250 million rides in Europe this week? Well, today we're celebrating 20 million rides in Berlin and 8 million rides in Munich! Altogether, this accounts for about 11% of all trips taken - wow! This achievement highlights the pivotal role of shared micromobility in shaping the transportation landscape of these dynamic cities. 🛴 Integral to the Transport System: In Berlin alone, over 32 million kilometers have been traveled on Voi scooters, equivalent to circling the globe over 800 times! Notably, a majority of rides occur in the outer districts, highlighting the e-scooters' vital contribution to the city's public transport network. 🤝 Deeply integrated into the public transport networks: In Munich, Voi is one of the few providers to be fully integrated into MVG's public transport service. In Berlin, a Voi ride can be booked via the Jelbi app. 🅿️ Both Munich and Berlin exemplify the importance of gradually expanding parking infrastructure to enhance order and meet demand. Munich has set up what is probably the densest station-based sharing system in Germany in its city center. Meanwhile, Berlin's Jelbi has deployed over 120 stations, with plans for further expansion. We're excited to continue shaping mobility history in these remarkable cities.
