Just finished listening to a thought-provoking interview by Hard Fork featuring Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity (Watch it here: https://lnkd.in/e3pPSJFf). The conversation revolved around Perplexity's Answer Engine which combines web search and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) to provide insightful answers with original source links. A key discussion point emerged on monetizing this innovation and fairly compensating third-party data sources for their crucial contributions. The idea of using analytics from RAG's similarity search to create a royalties-based business model is particularly intriguing. Imagine writers and data providers opting in to monetize their sources based on usage and impact over time. This concept could reshape how we acknowledge and reward contributors in the AI landscape. It got me thinking about other companies, like OpenAI and Google, that also integrate web search with RAG. How are they approaching this dynamic intersection of technology and content creation?
