On the history of medicine. Inductive Reasoning. Modern medicine came a long way from the "age of the ear" in which people listened to and learned only from authority, to the "age of seeing" the "age of the eye" in which one had to see for oneself and prove one's theories to others. This age birthed the application of inductive reasoning to answer questions facing physicians. William Harvey, the discoverer of blood circulation wrote this beautiful description of inductive reasoning: "Nature herself must be out advisor. The path she chalks must be our walk. For as long as we confer with our own eyes and make our ascent from lesser things to higher, we shall be at length received into her closet of secrets" As modern researchers we learn a lot from this quote. Research Integrity: Don't discard that negative results or tweak the data to resemble your preference. As we make our studies and experiments we should be open to what we find. If we follow the scientific method in a honest and transparent manner, we will, like Harvey and others did truly find the secrets of nature! #historyofmedicine #researchintegrity #researchethics #williamharvey

Title: Dismantling the rhetoric of alternative medicine: Smokescreens, errors, conspiracies, and follies Authors: Edzard Ernst, Angelo Fasce Abstract. Alternative medicine has a high social prevalence, being promoted by well organized groups that have developed an intricate rhetoric in order to self-justify in the absence of evidence. This article will analyse some of these arguments, some of their fallacies – ad populum, ad ignorantiam –, other styles of reasoning – conspiracy theories – and other misconceptions of scientific concepts – placebo effect, scientific authority. The objective will be to highlight the poverty of the rhetoric of proponents of alternative medicine, with special emphasis on the dangers for the consumer.
