Crown Refs—the rest is history! 👑 Next question: How many members are in the group? This is an interesting one because there are a few different metrics to consider. Patreon has changed its structure to include free members, so initially, it was only a paid membership platform. Now, they’re aiming to be more social and bring more attention to the platform. Right now, we’re at close to 800 free members on Patreon, but Discord is where we really measure the heart of our community. We’re just shy of 400 officials actively engaged, learning, and growing together. 🌟 Three years ago, we launched Crown Refs, starting at zero like anything new. But I remember that moment so clearly, and I loved being at zero because I knew exactly where we were headed. You have to trust your intuition, believe in yourself, and know that growth is guaranteed if you stay dedicated. Jam7 - Midjourney Evolution I just checked ... I started using Midjourney in august 2022, only 1 month after it's closed beta release to the public. I started working with version 3, and I was blown away. With only a fraction of the capabilities and quality current versions have. However, after quite some prompting, I got the result you see in the below video tagged "--version 3". It resided on my laptop as background for quite some time. And honestly, despite it's limitations, I still love this image. So, yesterday, I took that prompt, and without any change, I generated images in all other Midjourney versions. It shows 3 things: 👉 The evolution & progress Midjourney made in a very short timespan 👉 It re-emphasises the fact that not only each image generation product, but even versions withing each product, require different prompting to get the similar results. 👉 Each of the products / versions can be seen as a different tool to use depending on the results you want to achieve. “It’s squeaky bum time” is not the typical sort of headline you’d expect to see in the esteemed Financial Times. I enjoyed it, but I think it’s a bit previous. The full headline, written by FT journo Louis Ashworth, reads: “It’s squeaky.bum.time for what3words”, with the additional punctuation taking the mick out of the aforementioned London-based geolocator start-up’s USP – being able to pinpoint any spot on Planet Earth with a concatenation of three seemingly random words. The article took a fairly cynical view of w3w’s recently reported results for 2023, which showed an improving picture with net losses virtually halved at a still excruciating £16.5m on revenues of a mere £1.1m. When I first wrote about w3w back in 2014, a year after its launch, I started my post saying, “I think I understand the concept but not yet the value”. I did a bit of a reverse ferret in July 2022 when co-founders Chris Sheldrick (CEO), and Jack Waley-Cohen (COO), raised a further £6m (after many, many prior rounds) , calling w3w “a brilliant, brilliant idea” though I mooted there was something fundamentally wrong with the business model. Which is where I stand today (or, more precisely sit, in my home office at pint.baseline.binder). I get the point that w3w has accumulated losses north of £136m on miniscule revenues (the app is free to use for the average punter), and that it survives only through the kindness of strangers. And apparently it doesn’t always give the right location (but there again neither does my satnav). But unfortunately, I can’t see how w3w can ever make money – even its premium service for large enterprises only costs £235 per month. Nonetheless, I think w3w provides a valuable – arguably essential – service, especially in situations where traditional mapping apps fall short. w3w still has over £27m in cash and term deposits to call on which, at current burn rate, should see them through the next couple of years without a further raise. Hopefully by then a complementary business with deep pockets will have bought them.
