As a legal recruiter, I frequently work with highly visible partners who find themselves in a challenging position: they want to make a lateral move for personal or professional reasons but are cautious about how to present this change without disparaging their current firm. This is especially critical in smaller practice areas where everyone knows each other. Not being diplomatic in such situations can lead to strained relationships and a tarnished professional reputation - a difficult position to be in. It's essential to be diplomatic when explaining your reasons for leaving a firm. Having a solid, genuine reason is crucial because interviewers can easily detect a smoke screen. Here are a few effective ways to frame your departure positively: 1. Focus on Your Clients' Needs: "I'm looking to fully service my clients and need a larger platform or deeper expertise in order to do so." 2. Highlight a Positive Transition: "I have enjoyed my time at [Current Firm], but I'm seeking a new environment to support my practice growth and values contributions to a dynamic team." 3. Align with Personal and Professional Goals: "I'm looking for a position that better aligns with my personal and professional goals, and I believe [Prospective Firm] offers the right environment for that." 4. Seek New Challenges: "After achieving significant milestones at [Current Firm], I'm eager to take on new challenges and opportunities that will push my professional growth further." These responses not only allow you to be honest about your reasons for leaving without speaking negatively about your current firm, but they also emphasize the importance of maintaining a positive professional reputation. By focusing on positive aspects and future opportunities, you can navigate the transition smoothly and ensure that your reputation remains intact. I just hung up the phone with a junior associate who was looking for advice on "the market" and new opportunities. I immediately shared that I probably wouldn't be a great resource for him, as our clients typically do not utilize us for associates with less than two years of actual legal work experience as agency recruiters are for lateral moves. Even so, I wanted to learn more about what was ailing him, and his curiosities. Unbeknownst to him, he is on a very specific path that, without a pivot in the next 2-4 years, will likely cement the rest of his career due to the practice area in which he finds himself. As he's just a first year, he said he enjoyed the work fine, but there was certainly a reason he was reaching out to a recruiter. It was a classic case of you don't know what you don't know, but you know that you need more information about what you don't know. I encouraged him to evaluate the other opportunities through the lens of strategic growth and breadth of experience versus partner personalities or salary, because for this track, that will be the game changer. At the end of the call, he said, "thank you so much. I'm a first generation lawyer and I have no one else to give me advice on any of this. This is the most targeted career advice I've ever received." After nearly 20 years of issue spotting law careers, this is very easy for recruiters to do, and frankly, it's an easy (and fast) way to give back. If you have the time, experience and wisdom to pay it forward to someone just starting out, please do. My calendar was full today and I will likely never place this candidate, but it wasn't much to take 10 minutes to give him what could be career-changing advice. And if you're a junior lawyer wondering what the big idea is, don't be afraid to ask for help. You may get a world of info in one quick phone call. 📞💡 Opus: body of work. While we help clients and candidates alike create their very best bodies of work, I hope that my own body of work includes more than just "doing deals" and truly has an impact on those we serve. #whatsyouropus

⚡ Let's Chat - Keeping Your Job Search Organized ⚡ I know, easier said than done because we are all super busy, BUT I promise you it is worth it! You should absolutely keep track of what firms/companies you have applied to throughout your career, and specifically during your most recent job search! It is hard to back track in time to remember where you applied to. My simple solution - keep a running word or excel document. List the date, name of firm/company, how you applied/who you sent your submission to, and the outcome. Without a doubt, this enables a recruiter to be the best resource for you! We always want to make sure we are not duplicating our efforts, and ensure that we are using our time in the most effective way possible for you! Despite what some may think, it does not look good to a firm/company if they are receiving your resume multiple times and/or from multiple sources - it makes you look unorganized! Need help getting organized? Shoot me a quick email and I can provide you a template to keep track of your job search - no strings attached! 😀 Let's chat! 📧 tiffany.ambrose@lhh.com Register here for upcoming Lunch & Learn Webinar (Boston Legal Market Debrief) on 9/10 at 12 noon: https://lnkd.in/eMvRYyfA Follow me on Instagram for all things legal recruiting: https://lnkd.in/e3XEk_4N Click to view my most recent Quarterly Newsletter: https://lnkd.in/ekCDXEsa #jobsearchtips #legalrecruiter #legalrecruiting #lateralmarket #legalcareers #letschatwithrecruitertiff #team Emily Lam, Esq Emily Chamberlin, esq.

Looking for a new legal role? Here's why job boards might not be your best bet! 🚫 1. **Hidden Opportunities**: Many top law firms don't advertise on job boards. They rely on trusted recruiters to find the best talent. By contacting a recruiter, you get access to roles that aren't publicly listed. 2. **Personalised Guidance**: A recruiter offers tailored advice based on your unique skills and career goals. Job boards can't provide the same level of personalised support and insight into what firms are truly looking for. 3. **Time-Saving**: Sifting through countless job postings can be overwhelming and time-consuming. A recruiter does the legwork for you, presenting only the most relevant opportunities that match your profile. 4. **Negotiation Power**: Recruiters have the expertise to negotiate salaries and benefits on your behalf. They know the market rates and can ensure you get the best possible offer, something a job board can't do. 5. **Long-Term Relationships**: Building a relationship with a recruiter can benefit your career in the long run. They can provide ongoing support, career advice, and keep you informed about future opportunities. At Thornton Legal, we pride ourselves on building long-term relationships based on trust and communication.
