Making a career move As a recruiter at MLA with expertise focusing on placing lawyers in companies, I get many opportunities to speak to attorneys who are in transition or actively looking to make a move. Some have been at one company for over ten years thus are not at all familiar with job hunting. I thought I would share suggestions for making a move. First, many attorneys have no idea how recruiters work. When I left Verizon after 15 years, I did not have a clue. There are three types of recruiting done by legal recruiters. The first two type of recruiting involve partners and associates looking to move to another law firm. The third group involves lawyers looking to find an in-house opportunity. In this post I will address law firm placement by recruiters and cover in-house placement in my next post. If you are such a partner or associate looking to move to a new law firm, my recommendation is to talk to several recruiters and pick one you feel most comfortable with and who has the necessary experience. In the case of placements at law firms, one recruiter can represent you exclusively. The recruiter should work with you to develop a plan on which firms to contact. In the case of a partner, the recruiter can assist you in developing your business plan. A reputable recruiter will never share your resume without your prior approval. The last thing you want to do is have more than one recruiter representing you. This will decrease the interest of a top recruiter in working with you. Also, a law firm might receive your resume from more than one recruiter, which not only causes issues for the firm, but also will likely lessen the law firm’s initial impression of you. For the same reason, if you can get a recruiter to work with you take advantage of the opportunity as opposed to reaching out yourself. You might think that applying directly will increase your chances because the law firm will not have to pay a placement fee. To the contrary, law firms are more than willing to pay a fee for a good candidate and I have never known a firm to pick one candidate over another because it would not have to pay a fee. Being professionally represented by a recruiter increases your likelihood of success because the recruiter will have a relationship with the law firm, which will value the recruiter’s opinion of the candidate. Bottom line, talk to a recruiter(s) at MLA and pick one to proceed. As the saying goes, you will be in good hands. In my next post, I will address moving to a company.

Feeling unsure what to expect, or wondering whether it’s worth adding a third party to your job search process?   The answer to the second question is YES. (And I know – it seems like I’m biased since I am a legal recruiter, but I’m also speaking from my years of experience as a practicing attorney, during which I worked with several legal recruiters.)   So why is it worth it? And what should you expect from the process?   - A partnership. Working with a legal recruiter shouldn’t be a one-way street. While your first conversation may be about a specific opportunity the recruiter is currently working on, a good recruiter will ask questions to find out what kinds of opportunities you’re looking for and what your #careergoals are so they can tailor their search on your behalf.   - Confidentiality. The reasons behind wanting your job search to remain confidential don’t require much explanation. When you work with a recruiter, the fact of your job search should remain private, and you should verify that your resume will never be submitted anywhere for consideration without your permission.   - Market intel. Part of a recruiter’s job is to be familiar with the #legaljob market. This benefits you because a recruiter can help you figure out whether your practice area is seeing a lot of movement, what practice areas are hot (and not) in your market, and whether it’s a good time overall for you to look for new opportunities.   - Access to #unposted opportunities. This. 👏 One. 👏 Is. 👏 Key. If you’re conducting a job search on your own, you’re missing out on dozens of opportunities that never make it to the job boards. Legal recruiters cultivate relationships with partners and recruiting coordinators at a multitude of law firms, which means that many times, we’re the first (and sometimes the only) to hear of new opportunities. This means not only access to an INCREASED number of jobs for you, but also DECREASED competition, as unposted jobs – as the name suggests – aren’t publicly advertised.   - Insider info. A key aspect of a legal recruiter’s job is cultivating relationships – including with partners at law firms. Particularly for unposted positions, legal recruiters are likely to have insight about the firm, the practice group, and what personality would be a good fit with the team that you can’t get navigating the job market solo.   So there you have it – working with a legal recruiter can not only provide you with an ally in the frequently daunting job search process, but can also jump start your search and get you access to the best opportunities.   If you’re feeling inspired and ready to spring 🌺 into job search mode, reach out! “Why would I work with a recruiter, when I can reach out direct?” This is a common question from lawyers who have connections at the firms they’re interested in. While lawyers can (and do) make lateral moves on their own, here are 3 benefits to working with a recruiter: 1️⃣ You don’t know how your contacts are perceived within the firm. When a friend refers you to their firm, their reputation will impact the firm’s perception of you (for better or worse) 2️⃣ Recruiters follow-up. Emails get lost in inboxes. Non-urgent hiring decisions get pushed to the back burner. While your connections might be willing to make an introduction, recruiters are going to be consistent with following-up. 3️⃣ Submitting materials is the easy part, the true value of working with a recruiter is having a trusted advisor your corner as you navigate interviews, offer negotiations, and the decision-making process. You’d be surprised by how many lawyers get cold-feet once an offer is in hand, even though they actively want out of their current roles. It’s normal to feel fear and uncertainty when making a career move, so it helps to have a trusted, knowledgeable support system to help guide you through. There are times when making a lateral move on your own makes sense and there are times when working with a recruiter while help ease the transition. Lawyers – Where is your CV actually going? When using several recruiters to secure a new position, it’s VITAL you know exactly where your CV is going. On a daily basis I speak with Lawyers who don’t know which law firms have received their application. Why? Because the recruiters have taken it upon themselves to spray the CV to every law firm they can, without telling the Lawyer what they’re doing. This results in the same firms receiving your application on multiple occasions, without you even knowing about it! It can be a big red flag for law firms, and automatically sends off the wrong impression. A single duplication can be an honest mistake, but a firm repeatedly receiving the same application will frustrate them and potentially ruin your chances of securing a new role. How can this be avoided: ✔ Make sure a recruiter discusses specific opportunities with you. ✔ Ensure that recruiter only contacts that firm once they have your authorisation to do so. ✔ Keep your own spreadsheet of the recruiters you’ve instructed to engage with each firm. Work with a recruiter who will act in your best interests, and take back control of your search.
