Emerging legal markets like Miami, Nashville, and Denver continue to attract firms looking to expand their geographic footprints. These up-and-coming markets are particularly appealing to midsized firms looking to expand existing expertise, add new practice areas, and access largely untapped talent pools. Isabel DuPree recently spoke to Law360 about how midsized firms can make a statement by moving into secondary markets.

I enjoyed speaking with Xiumei Dong for her article in Law360, "Law Firms Upsizing M&A Teams For Expected Deals Rebound." At Macrae, we've seen a 71% increase in corporate partner hires among the top 50 firms in early 2024. This data reflects strategic moves to capitalize on expected market growth. I believe these hires could signal a significant uptick in M&A activity as market confidence returns. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eR5kAGi2

#Cravath Swaine & Moore LLP is historically known for its rarity in partner exits, but three partners left the firm in January alone to join #BigLaw rivals, a number that may end up jibing with prior years' departures but that some say could signal fresh challenges for the storied firm as it looks to retain talent. Law360 - Even As Offices Shutter, BigLaw Is Still Hedging On China https://lnkd.in/gysw8ryb “Specifically, when it comes to the regulatory challenges for law firms in China, requirements around how many qualified representatives - who spend most of their time within mainland China — firms need to have in each office has been a hurdle for some firms, according to Shawn Chen, a legal recruiter at SSQ Legal Recruitment. And when it comes to economic headwinds, the decline of the foreign direct investment business for global law firms in China has been a major blow, Chen said. Weil was the latest firm to announce plans to downsize in China, confirming last week that it had closed its Beijing office and was considering consolidating its Shanghai office with its operation in Hong Kong. A week earlier, Orrick said it was consolidating its China practice in Beijing and would decline to renew its Shanghai office lease, following a decision to terminate the firm's lease in Taiwan. Other firms that also recently announced the closure of their Shanghai offices include Perkins Coie and Latham. Meanwhile, Kirkland & Ellis LLP and Linklaters LLP have conducted layoffs across their China offices. And in a major change to its global strategy, Dentons separated from China's Dacheng, shedding thousands of lawyers in the country as a result. However, even as a number of firms are scaling down in China, others are opening new offices. Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP last year opened an office in Beijing, its second office in China, and Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP opened an office in the Chinese technology hub of Shenzhen. "Without doubt, there will be more closures and downsizing of foreign law firms over the next six to 12 months, with U.S. firms taking the lead," Chen told Law360 Pulse. "However, if the Chinese regulatory authorities make some positive policy changes, or the macroeconomic situation in China and across the world improves, this trend could reverse very quickly. The real problem is uncertainty — no one knows when, or if, this might happen."”
