What stage will you be standing on this year? Today is World Theatre Day and it got me thinking about my public speaking clients and all the different types of stages and venues that they’ve spoken on and all the different technical challenges they’ve dealt with when turning up to a venue from: 👉 A Raked stage where the stage slopes upwards, away from the audience 👉 A “hollow” stage – where when you start walking around the stage, your shoes (and high heels!) make a huge clunking noise 👉 A stage where, as a panel member, the high stools don’t have any foot support, so you struggle to balance sitting on that stool for over an hour! 👉 A 45-metre stage – lots of challenges here, say no more! 👉 A sunken stage where the speaking area is sunk into the floor so you’re speaking below the audience level Yes, these are examples of all sorts of crazy things that can happen when speaking on different types of stages. When I’m discussing the proposed venue with clients, I always talk to them about the different types of surprises they can encounter when they walk in the door and the many things that I’ve encountered myself! If you’re not prepared for anything and everything, when you arrive at a venue, big or even small changes can completely throw you off and can impact how you speak because that panic creates anxiety around how you’re going to manage the particular issue and can in some instances, completely diminish a speaker’s confidence – because when you’re up there, you are on your own. No-one’s going to help you, you’ve got to be able to adapt in the moment, deal with the issues as best you can under the circumstances, push ahead and deliver a killer speech. With experience, comes confidence and that sudden rush of anxiety can be controlled. It’s one of the reasons I recommend a speaker arrives at a venue (especially for a big event) at least 2-3 hours early if possible so that they can talk to the technical team and try to find solutions or compromises as well as having the opportunity to get on the stage and “feel” what it’s going to be like to deliver to the audience in that space. The remaining time won’t be wasted because you can rehearse and practice your speech privately, get yourself “in the zone” etc., so that you’re fully prepared and ready to go out there and smash your speech. I love nothing more than jumping on-site in my high-viz and steelies so, should I be jumping on your site? More than a couple of times, I've organised a stand-up comedy show at a venue on behalf of a company and been accosted by the venue manager thereafter. "Did you organise that show!?" "Yes. Why?" "It was funny." "Thanks." "Do you think that you could do something like that for us?" When I look at our sales figures over the last four months, it seems that 70% of our revenue has come as a result of enquiries from venue managers who had seen our corporate shows. Venues for corporate shows are often grand and beautiful; country clubs, four and five-star hotels, golf courses... It gave me an idea. Why not approach the venues directly and organise as many shows as possible with their events teams? Then, I got slightly carried away... And next week, I have a meeting to discuss a series of stand-up comedy shows in an actual castle, just outside the M25. 12th century castles might become my company's new ICP. After all, if your day's shift isn't spent in a castle, then you might need to ask where it all went so wrong... I just hope that one day, the same will be true when I'm working from home. #comedyonlinkedin #fitforaking
