Unlocking the Future: Displays, Controls, and Virtual Environments In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, the integration of displays and controls within virtual environments (VEs) is transforming how we interact with digital systems. Here’s a deep dive into the key aspects and challenges of this exciting field. 1. The Power of Displays and Controls Effective displays and controls are the backbone of any user interface, whether in industrial settings or virtual environments. The goal is to create intuitive, efficient, and error-free interactions. Here are some critical considerations: Spatial Correspondence: Ensuring a high degree of spatial correspondence between controls and displays can significantly reduce cognitive load and errors. For example, aligning the layout of stove burners with their controls can prevent operational mistakes. Population Stereotypes: Leveraging common expectations, such as the “clockwise-for-anything” rule, can enhance usability. However, designers must be mindful of cultural differences, especially when designing for diverse user groups. 2. Virtual Environments: Bridging the Real and Digital Worlds Virtual environments offer immersive experiences that can revolutionize training, design, and visualization. However, they come with their own set of challenges: Technological Limitations: Current VEs often suffer from issues like system lag, low refresh rates, and limited resolution. These factors can lead to cybersickness, characterized by nausea, oculomotor disturbances, and disorientation. Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs): While HMDs can enhance immersion, they must be carefully designed to avoid visual strain and ensure synchronization with head movements. Discrepancies in lens and display alignment can cause undesirable visual effects. 3. Ergonomic Design: A Path to Efficiency and Comfort Ergonomic design is not just about comfort; it’s about optimizing human-machine interaction for better performance and safety. Historical examples highlight the financial benefits of ergonomic improvements: Industrial Sewing Machines: Redesigning speed controls and using variable-speed motors have shown significant reductions in task time and errors, leading to increased productivity. Digital Gauges: Replacing traditional vernier gauges with digital indicators on lathes has markedly reduced setting times, enhancing machine utilization. 4. The Future of Virtual Environments To fully realize the potential of VEs, we need to address current technological limitations and focus on user-centric design. Key areas for improvement include: High Resolution and Fast Refresh Rates: Enhancing visual quality and reducing lag can improve the sense of presence and reduce cybersickness. Natural Inputs and Consistency: Ensuring that interactions are intuitive and consistent with user expectations can make VEs more accessible and effective. #VirtualReality #Ergonomics #UserExperience #Innovation #Technology

Reflecting on my experience with the ShapesXR design challenge, I discovered a new fascination with the intricacies of cars. As a proud pedestrian, I have never considered the complexity of driving systems. (Why drive and contribute to pollution and increase the risk of a driving accident, when you could work remotely and never need a car‽). Embracing this unknown territory, I realised that my struggle to comprehend diverse dashboards and interconnected systems wasn't a personal hurdle, but a common challenge in car system design. In theory in-car digital interfaces seem better, as they offer more space, but they increase complexity and can be unsafe for the driver. What I found most challenging was deciding the logical order and representation of content within the limited interior space. This makes adding the additional course modules related to these interior controls even harder. Understanding how various features function and when certain features override others and in which cases these exceptions occur was very confusing. CHALLENGES: - Cars with sim cards vs LTE vs wifi vs GPS vs none. - IoT devices often connect intermittently, resulting in parts of the service being out of sync with other parts. - Our inability to control latency means responsiveness of our systems are affected when interactions are routed via the internet. (This is where connected products differ from design of physical things, where the expectation is for immediate response).- This can result in perceived reduced reliability. - Interoperability --with so many platforms, do we address the problem from a specific platform level or do we group devices by different network types? Is the device directly addressable on the internet, or does it need to be connected via a gateway? -- And what additional security risks does this add? - Which sensors will be available? Facial recognition, eye tracking? - Inaccurate information output eg. Inability of car system to differentiate slippery roads from potholes. I do not have all the answers, but I am sharing for those who want to build on from my research. Moving forward, I believe in prioritising the following areas essential for navigating the evolving landscape of car technology: - Risk, Safety and Human Reliability - Strength capability of user - Spatial accommodation: namely, seating or standing position and visual field and obstruction of view - Cognitive and perceptual ergonomics, work stress and work training, mental workload, decision-making, optimising of user or team performance. - Predictive maintenance To learn more, see case study of various use cases: Jaguar, Tata Motors, Meta AI at Meta, Ray-Ban: https://lnkd.in/ghsMmCHj Feel free to share your feedback (I have added links to 3 of my Shapes XR prototypes in my case study, for you to view in VR or via your browser) #instructionaldesign #xr #ux #connectedservices #justforfun
