5 questions with our new Campaign Coordinator - Jo McKenzie We are very excited to recently have welcomed Jo into the Campaign For Wool NZ team - so excited in fact that we immediately asked her to be our inaugural interviewee for our brand new series "5 questions with...." Over the next few months we will be interviewing people from all over New Zealand working within the wool industry asking them a quick fire 5 questions. We hope that this helps to showcase all the different people of wool, and get their 5 cents, in 5 questions about why wool is so wonderful. So with that in mind - please welcome Jo : 🐑 What attracted you to working in the wool industry? Because Wool is cool! My husband and I breed ultra fine merino ewes, seeing the process from paddock to product inspired me to get involved in the industry. 🐑 Are there any upcoming trends for wool that you can see? I believe there is a gap in the industry for strong wool and by educating about benefits of wool vs synthetics, wool will be utilised a lot better and hopefully increase returns for NZ Farmers. There is also a huge drive in the industry for consumers to be able to have traceability of their woollen products, seeing the processes of manufacturing, ultimately tracing it back to the farm the wool was grown on! 🐑 Why is choosing wool products important to you? Considering the many benefits of wool being so incredible - why would we not opt for it over synthetic! 🐑 What is your favourite wool product and why? Anything wool is incredible it is hard to pick a favourite, a bit bias but would have to be the kids woollen jerseys (pictured), knitted by their Nanny & Great Granny! 🐑 Is there anything about wool that you think is misunderstood by the general public? Not misunderstood just sadly undereducated. The benefits of the properties of wool are so incredible, if everyone was educated on how wonderful it is, I believe it would be valued more accordingly! It’s been interesting to see the continued media coverage of events at The Body Shop. I have to say that the coverage has generally been thoughtful and intelligent, and two particular newspapers have ‘played a blinder’. The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian are not usual bedfellows - arguably they are at opposite ends of the political spectrum. Forget arguably. But the brilliant journalists at both ‘papers have sensed that there is an important story here. It’s not a story of a failing brand and the death of the high street. It’s much more interesting and important than that. It’s about the role of purposeful business and how capitalism can and should work. This thoughtful article states the case for why you should buy Body Shop products. Not to be nice. Or kind. Or as an act of charity. Buy them because they are really good, formulated with love to be excellent in their category. Products that perform and have had many intelligent people working to minimise the environmental impact and maximise the positive social impact. We need to celebrate a little more that - despite the doubters - excellent journalism is alive and well.

The Body Shop. A rebel with a cause.   Like many, I’m saddened to see what has happened to The Body Shop over the last few days. However, I remain hopeful that the brand can rejuvenate itself and thrive, preserving its potential for future generations.   When I was growing up in the 80’s Anita Roddick was a ubiquitous figure on the telly and in the press advocating her philanthropic vision, The Body Shop’s values and causes. She was amazing. She engaged an entire generation, myself included that wanted to be part of something huge, something transformational, something pioneering. She instilled in us the belief that we could effect change and stand as a force for good. Who could have imagined that we could literally change the world with soap? I had the privilege of joining The Body Shop in 2001 and was proud to have been part of the team there for 15 years. I worked with Anita for five years and spent another 10 years there with L’Oréal. I didn’t intend to stay there so long, but the thing about The Body Shop is it just gets under your skin and into your DNA. The values and the teams of brilliantly talented and inspiring people were what made me stay, and they were what made us different. We all rallied behind the causes, championed the values and made a tangible impact on the world. Reflecting on everything The Body Shop has achieved, I am amazed.  As well as creating stunning products, the teams over the years changed mindsets and laws and how we all do business today. The Body Shop invented community fair trade, they campaigned tirelessly against animal cruelty in the beauty industry, they brought recycling and sustainability to the masses, they promoted green energy and raised awareness on HIV, Sex Trafficking and Domestic Violence to name just a few. These were radical shifts in society.   The biggest challenge we always had was the fact that the brand was global and became fragmented. It became a heavy juggernaut that was no longer agile, no longer free to be reactive and proactive. When it was small and in its infancy, it was political and edgy and had a strong POV. None of which easily translated globally and cost effectively.   However, challenges aside, The Body Shop was a trail blazer, a firecracker the rebel with a cause on the high street. Whoever ends up with what is left of this brilliant brand at their fingertips, please be agile, be edgy, be creative and brave.
