Stepping into the #SCOPEsummit conference today was buzzing with opportunity! 🤩 From innovative startups to industry stalwarts, 4000+ visionaries had gathered under one roof. What struck me most was the spirit of collaboration. Everyone was keen to share lessons learned, brainstorm together and find ways to collectively push boundaries. 🤝 This energy was electrifying! The keynotes set the tone - showing how tackling society's grandest challenges requires breaking silos. Seeing crowds hanging on every word really drove that message home. SCOPE clearly fosters a community that celebrates diverse perspectives. Through intimate workshops and lively panel talks, fresh ideas sparked at every turn. The IMPACT LAB 40 years ago, one day, I was talking to my dad (He lost his hearing in 1980 cuz of a killer medicine's side effect called Streptomycin. I learned how to speak to a person who can't hear, thanks to my dad). He told me, "When you reach 40, everyone will have access to things, people will be skilled, you will have enough money, and so on. But remember, rarely will people have the ability to connect with humans; therefore, focus on human relationships." I took his advice to heart and started observing, unlearning, and rewiring myself. I converse with everyone from Uber drivers, BBMP ladies who clean the road, and the guy who serves food at a nearby restaurant, celebrities, to founders and CXOs of Fortune 100 companies. I speak to everyone as a human being without categorization and learned what empathy is from Ramakrishna Paramahansa. I have a special affinity for connecting with entrepreneurs. In the last 21 years, Pepper Square has incubated, nurtured, and supported 121 startups, some of which have become $2B companies. I did invest in 9 of them. We recently started "The Impact Lab," an initiative by Pepper Square to meet and listen to the challenges and needs of founders and CXOs who are building next-gen and scalable businesses. We use various methodologies to suit the business's needs and create a personalized roadmap for its success using our Design Thinking Workshops. Standing by Principles: The Non-Negotiable Value of #Credibility "I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I need to cancel last minute. And I respect you too much to ghost you. So I'm going to tell this to you straight: I cannot, in good conscience, share a stage with that person." A voicemail I left for an event organizer. Here's the story: Recently, I had the privilege of co-hosting an amazing full-day event for SF Tech Week. Organizing such an event is a monumental task with countless moving pieces. We had two stages featuring a mix of keynotes, panels, and an entire afternoon dedicated to pitching on one of them. You can read more about it at the linked post. Given the scale, I wasn't personally able to vet every speaker, presenter, host, judge, and pitching business. Neither were any of the other co-hosts. The other hosts and I understood that there's a certain amount of risk involved in an event of this magnitude. But with risk comes learning. We learn who stepped up and earned our continued trust. We learn who may need more support if we work with them again. We learn who is credible and who we want to collaborate with in the future. And we learn who is simply not credible—and whom we won't work with again. Mitchell Levy, CCS has taught me a great deal about credibility. One of the relevant lessons to this post is to always be respectful of the stage, the hosts, and the audience. During the event, I was invited to speak at another upcoming SF Tech Week event and was delighted to accept. The next morning I did my homework. I looked at the event page, looked up the hosting companies, and was surprised by what I found. The event was being co-hosted by someone I had just found to be extraordinarily not-credible; dubious, as Mitchell would say. But that's not emphatic enough to really describe my feelings for this person's behavior. I won't go into specifics; that would be disrespectful of me. Suffice it to say: this person's behavior was so disrespectful that I felt compelled to back out of the event. I found myself in the position of declining a speaking slot I had previously accepted. An uncomfortable scenario and situation, for myself and the organizers. The organizers reached out multiple times in hopes that I would reconsider. I understand—the challenges of losing a speaker on the day of an event are significant. I've been in their shoes, and I genuinely hope the event was a success for the other hosts. But it needed to be a success without me. Standing by our principles isn't always easy. But credibility and integrity are non-negotiable in our personal and professional journeys. https://lnkd.in/gcu9DhaR

In 2022, I joined the Intel Ignite Europe program for the first time. Together with John Zimmer and supported by Markus Bohl's team, we help #deeptech start-ups elevate their public speaking and pitching skills to a whole new level. I remember my first encounter with 21 founders of 10 start-ups. At one point, I asked them, "Who among you has a PhD?" Eighteen hands went up. These academic entrepreneurs are some of the most intelligent people I have ever met. And yet, when it comes to public speaking, rhetoric, and pitching for funding, I can feel their pain. One of the biggest challenges for them is the necessary mental shift, as shown in the infographic below. What is beautiful to witness, every single time, is the magic that happens when they complement their academic power with rhetorical prowess.
