⚠ Spoiler alert – personal post: Management lessons from Dragonboating When recently applying the #IcebergModel in a workshop to surface hidden personal characteristics and deeper roots of behavioral patterns, I realized: What has influenced me significantly, lies well below the surface of the water: years of competitive Dragon boating, first in Hong Kong, later with the Swiss National team. For good reasons this paddle sport - 22 athletes moving together, precisely aligned, sitting shoulder to shoulder in the small space of a canoe - is often used for team building exercises. At the occasion of today’s #InternationalDragonBoatDay my key learnings, that became my guiding principle in managing teams: 👯♂️ Teamwork beats solo-out-performers: consistent strokes applied at the same time, have more impact to speed, than single initiatives. Consequently… 🕓 Adopt your pace : …you can only pace as fast as your slowest paddler. 🤝 Trust is the base : not every team member has the same absolute strength, but it is essential to the motivation of all, to trust that every individual is giving his/her/their personal best. 👀 All eyes in the boat : Don’t get distracted from your own race by what the competitions does. 🎯 Clarity matters : communication in the boat is concise and crystal clear, orders are rehearsed. 🔄 Prepare & visualize : take a moment and visualize the challenge ahead, the noise, the rush, who will be next to you. 🚀 The race is now - don't hold back : saving power for a later race might mean, that this later race will never happen. 🏆 Competing is fun : you race to win, you lose to learn. 👷♀️ Work with the team you have : there is no team B, no secret weapon, believe in the potential you can unlock through preparation and joint effort coming together. These two days in Planica (SLO) with the promising young Nordic skiers were wonderful. In January, we started a path that aims to #involve and #listen more and more the young athletes on sustainability issues. It is a project to make #athletes truly protagonists of #change. The role of FIS in this project is to #inspire and #facilitate their ideas, treating all their ideas with respect, even the strangest - which sometimes is also the winning one. It was nice to see how even those initially less tempted found the #inspiration to participate by making their own contribution. I think this drive is due to the #possibility of putting an #idea into action, giving it shape, making it #tangible. A big #thanks to all the people involved! The Stockholm syndrome like relationship between Norwegian oil companies and winter sports is painful to watch. It’s one thing to accept sponsor money from the very industry that is destroying winter sports (and life on earth). But to watch how representatives from the skiing community have to embrace those sponsorships in the media and at events like this is just sad. Vår Energi is Norway’s second largest fossil fuel exporter (after Equinor) with a massive growth strategy. Vår Energi is one of the world’s fastest growing E&Ps (exploration and production) compnaies. In just two years, by end 2025, production output will almost double from 2023 levels to around 400 thousand barrels of oil equivalents per day. Vår Energi signed a sponsorship deal with the Norwegian National Alpine Ski teams in 2023. In the press release sports director at the Norwegian Ski Federation, Claus Ryste said: «We are delighted to welcome Vår Energi as a key partner to our Alpine ski teams. Their dedication to collaboration and fostering an environment where individuals thrive within a team perfectly aligns with our own values. Together, I am sure we will achieve inspiring and remarkable results.» These kind of press releases often emphasizes the «mutual values» between the oil companies and their sponsees. I find it very hard to understand what shared values a winter sports team have with a fossil fuel company.

Our CEO, Philipp Lehner, recently participated at this year's versusfestival in the skiing resort in Montafon, Austria. 😎 The idea behind the festival is that two parties discuss about contrasting topics. Philipp was confronted with the statement that "The economy has to degrow for sustainability".
