Many Ugandan primary students struggle with reading at their grade level. The 2023 assessment found less than half (42.7 percent) of Grade 6 students were proficient in English - the language of teaching instruction. Since 2022, VVOB and the Hempel Foundation, in partnership with Uganda’s Ministry of Education, have been running the “UCatchUp” programme. UCatchUp uses local languages and hands-on, playful, engaging lessons to build reading skills before switching to English from Grade 4. Results are promising: In 2023, students saw a 21% boost in reading simple sentences in English and a 37% improvement in local language skills. UCatchUp is successfully addressing literacy gaps and proving the value of using local languages as a foundation for English learning. #InternationalLiteracyDay #UCatchUp

PROJECT EVALUATION OF THE "ESN: STT" PROGRAM IN UZBEKISTAN As part of the "English Speaking Nation: Secondary Teacher Training Program (ESN: STT)" in Uzbekistan, extensive work was carried out to improve the qualifications and pedagogical skills of English language teachers in secondary schools. The ESN:STT program is a comprehensive three-year initiative aimed at improving the English language proficiency and teaching skills of secondary school teachers in Uzbekistan. It used a cascade model in which trained Core Trainers (CTs) train Regional Peer Mentors (RPMs), who then train other teachers, ensuring widespread and sustainable impact. The Al Mar Consulting team conducted an extensive assessment using both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, including 1,579 interviews, focus group discussions, and lesson observations. The purpose of the evaluation was to assess the effectiveness of the program, identify problems, and make recommendations for future improvements. Achievements of the program. One of the main achievements of ESN:STT is the significant improvement in teachers' teaching skills and their English language proficiency. The program helped guide teachers away from traditional teacher-centered methods toward more dynamic, student-centered approaches in schools. This shift created an interactive and engaging classroom environment. The program was conducted by the American Consulate for International Education in collaboration with two key partners: the International Association for the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and the Center for International Education in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University. #esn_uzbekistan #almar #consulting #ESN_STT #project_evaluation #marketing_research

As a teacher in a public school located in an underserved community, I have noticed that children primarily encounter the English language only within the four walls of the classroom. This makes it challenging for them to develop a complete grasp of the English language at a very young age. Therefore, as educators, it is crucial that we employ diverse teaching methods to ensure that the limited hours our students spend in the classroom significantly enhance their English language proficiency, including understanding, speaking, and comprehension. Imagine a scenario where, in a basic science class, a teacher presents a colourful picture on the wall with various objects, such as animals and vegetation. If the students were asked to describe the contents of the picture in their native language, many hands would eagerly shoot up. But if the teacher requested responses to be in English, the dynamics would shift. 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬. The recent announcement from the #MinistryofEducationEthiopia regarding the prohibition of learning English as a subject and using it as a medium of instruction at pre-primary school for other subjects is concerning. While it's crucial for children to learn academic content in their native languages, it's undeniable that proficiency in English is essential for global competence. This decision could hinder our children's ability to compete effectively on the global stage. We urge the Ministry to reconsider this policy before its implementation. It's vital that our education system equips our children with the language skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly competitive world. #Education #LanguageLearning #GlobalCompetence #EthiopiaMinistryofEducation

Recently developed new multilingual glossaries and apps for learners and teachers for Eastern Cape Department of Education: The system includes a multilingual termbank server (using our tlTerm software, which allows multi-user editing and addition of entries in the glossary), and allows for immediate publishing of new terminology updates and additions in future. It also includes educational resources like official spelling rules for isiXhosa and Sesotho, multilingual educational activities, digitized isiXhosa Idioms and Expressions, and more. The system currently supports English, isiXhosa, Sesotho and Afrikaans, and is designed to be expanded to support 12 official languages (11 spoken languages, plus potentially in future South African Sign Language (SASL) which is now South Africa's 12 official language.) The system is designed to help support MTBBE (Mother Tongue Based Bilingual Education), and includes features such as having the user interface IN isiXhosa, Sesotho and Afrikaans are intended to help make it user-friendly and accessible for young learners who may not understand English, but currently get taught in English, creating difficulties for learners - a situation the Department of Education are trying to help solve with resources such as this. https://lnkd.in/e33SAXCP
