🎙️ Thrilled to share that I was interviewed by Shane Beatty on Newstalk's Breakfast Briefing this morning! 🎙️ We delved into the recently launched My MS My Needs survey report, shedding light on the pressing issues facing the MS community in Ireland. Key findings include: 🧠 Access to Neurology: Regional disparities are evident, with 19% of respondents waiting more than six months for their last neurologist appointment and 41% traveling over an hour (one-way) to see their neurologist. 🧩 MRI Scans: While 68% had an MRI in the past year, 19% faced waits of over six months. 🏥 Neurorehabilitation: Only 2% accessed neurorehabilitation services, with 60% unaware of them. The slow rollout of Community Neurorehabilitation Teams (CNRTs) and lack of sustainable funding for long-term neurorehabilitation, such as MS Ireland’s physiotherapy programme, remain critical issues. 💪 Care and Support: Many rely on loved ones, with 52% receiving help from family and friends. Additionally, 35% require over 31 hours of care weekly, and 8% need full-time care. 💰 Financial Strain: Financial struggles are prevalent, with nearly 20% of respondents facing economic difficulties due to their condition. We hope this survey acts as a catalyst for change, driving tangible improvements in the care and support for those living with MS. Happy Sunday! I am still reminiscing about being on the Hill last week with our dedicated advocates fighting for a healthcare system that prioritizes patients. And it’s essential to know and remember that “patient” is merely one aspect of a person’s identity— an important message conveyed to Congress. I have enjoyed sharing my This week isn’t as busy as the past few weeks, and that’s okay. There are positive initiatives in the works that have a promise to improve kidney health and transplantation, like the HRSA OPTN Modernization (reform of the U.S. organ donation and transplant system), and other efforts that will hopefully be announced soon. Even though this week won’t be as eventful, here is what I will be prioritizing: ⭐️ Gratitude and acknowledgement: taking time to say thank you my colleagues for their helpful contributions to my work. There’s not much I do alone and people deserve their flowers 💐 ⭐️ Community Care: self-care is necessary, as the saying goes, “you can’t pour from an empty cup”. Community Care is important, too. We need to check on one another, uplift each other, and love on one another. I love pouring into others, and am always deeply appreciative when people encourage me. ⭐️ Exercise: my mantra has long been “more flesh, more flavor”! My docs disagree 😆 I’m going to take moving my body more seriously. It’s a great stress reliever but I also want to make sure I’m healthy enough to not only live the length of my life but also the width! Have a wonderful week. When it comes to Universal Health Coverage, the critical role of early disease detection cannot be overstated. Many individuals unknowingly suffer from debilitating diseases like cancer and lifestyle-related conditions. These silent health threats often go undetected until they reach an advanced stage. Unfortunately, barriers such as the high cost of healthcare and waning patient-provider trust prevent many people from accessing essential diagnostic services. However, there is hope. By collaborating with Faith-Based communities that have established trust within underserved populations, we can develop innovative, low-cost or zero-cost solutions to provide crucial early detection services. These initiatives contribute significantly to research and policy formulation. I am thrilled to be part of the team designing an innovative program in collaboration with the Duke University Head and Neck department. Our focus is on screening for Head and Neck Cancer within the immigrant community in Raleigh—a vibrant group composed of refugees from various nations. I eagerly anticipate the positive impact this program will have on their health and well-being. 🌟🌎🙌 https://lnkd.in/ewGH9ZBN

Shout out and request for help to my network! 🗣️🙌 This week, Janharmen and I will be in Geneva to represent GOAL 3 at the #WorldHealthAssembly and discuss the potential of the IMPALA system to transform and strengthen health systems. 🌍🏥 Our goal is to engage with funders, policymakers, NGOs, politicians, and more—anyone who can help us in our journey, but also those we can help achieve their goals! 💪🤝 GOAL 3 is deeply committed to #SDG3, far beyond just our name. 📝 2 years ago, a resolution was adopted to accelerate investments in human resources for health. 🚑 Last year, a resolution prioritized emergency and critical care services as essential components of universal health coverage. 📢 This year, we are part of a side event organized by #EGPAF, Save the Children International, and the Ministry of Health, calling for action to speed up investments in child care. How do we address this? 🔧 Our IMPALA solution is a sustainable tool for health workers, reducing their burden by automating repetitive tasks and facilitating task shifting. Shorter admission times mean reduced bed occupancy and workload, leading to lower costs for patients and health facilities. 📊 By collecting, collating, and presenting essential data in a single intuitive interface, health workers can assess risk, detect improvement and deterioration, and intervene timely. This enables proactive escalation and de-escalation of care, ensuring a well-functioning health system. 👶 For all patients, especially children and neonates, this means improved outcomes and faster recovery, aligning perfectly with what we will be presenting. Why does this system change require many conversations? 1️⃣ It is cross-cutting, addressing the fundamental aspects of the health system rather than focusing on a single disease or patient group. 2️⃣ It involves digital solutions, hardware, and services. We don’t fit into a conventional box; we focus on solving the problem, taking unconventional routes if necessary. 3️⃣ We combine upfront costs (capex) with a subscription/service model (opex), requiring buy-in from multiple stakeholders to ensure sustainability. It's brilliant to see Social Prescribing mentioned as one of the Six ways to save the NHS (https://lnkd.in/eMihkhuu) Social prescribing is becoming increasingly recognised as a vital approach to improving healthcare, particularly as a means of alleviating pressure on the NHS. By addressing social, emotional, and practical needs alongside traditional medical treatments, social prescribing helps individuals manage their health holistically. Rather than solely focusing on medication and clinical interventions, it connects patients with non-medical services such as community groups, creative activities, exercise programs, and support networks that can significantly enhance their mental and physical well-being. The importance of social prescribing lies in its ability to tackle the root causes of health issues, such as loneliness, stress, and lack of purpose/community, which often lead to chronic conditions. For example, people struggling with depression, anxiety, or long-term illness benefit from participating in creative arts, or volunteering, which can foster a sense of belonging and purpose, both of which are central to our work at Nucleus Arts. This integrated approach can reduce the need for medical interventions, including medications and GP visits, while empowering individuals to take control of their health. Nucleus Arts plays a key role as a social prescriber by offering creativity-based activities and creative workshops as part of this holistic approach to health. Through art therapy, exhibitions, and community arts programs, we provide a space for individuals to express themselves, build social connections, and improve mental health, activities that contribute to overall well-being, demonstrating how the arts can be a crucial tool in preventative healthcare, social justice and community wellness.
