Looking to save water in your home or office garden? 🌱 Water Corporation's Waterwise Plants directory identifies native, low-maintenance plants that thrive in our climate. Choosing these plants not only conserves water but also keeps our gardens looking great all year round. Expressions of interest are also now open for Waterwise Councils to receive up to $10,000 to support waterwise greening initiatives. This funding can support activities such as waterwise verge and plant sale subsidies. For more information visit https://brnw.ch/21wMLoa

"Look mum, i'm on the news!" 🤣 It's been so awesome working with my team, in partnership with Water Corporation, on our increasingly popular waterwise community programs the last few years. Mega shout out to Fiona Blackham in particular (plant giveaway superstar 🌟 - nearly 22,000 WA-natives given out last year, most grown by our awesome in-house-nursery staff)! Residents who participate in our waterwise programs report to us not just beautiful results but also broad benefits, beyond big water savings. From improved wellbeing and social connection to reduced maintenance requirements/costs and more beautiful and cooler streets. Thats not to mention the improvements to biodiversity, habitat, and quality of water runoff. The positive impact is unquestionable and its feels so good to see it. More than anything, this movement is the most sensible gardening adaptation to our drying and warming climate. The growing decentralised network of native gardens across the city is a trojan horse with collective force, helping create a greener, cooler and more waterwise city. #kepkatitjin #begroundwaterwise #waterwise #WaterwiseGreeningScheme
Our Waterwise Greening Scheme provides eligible councils with up to $10,000 in co-funding for urban greening activities. 🌱 A record 23 waterwise-endorsed councils received funding in the last financial year. This takes the scheme’s total contribution to $675,000 since 2019, providing a total of 296,000 native plants, 1,000 waterwise verges, and 6,000 street trees. 🌳 After Perth’s driest six months in 150 years, it's more important than ever that we work together to reduce water use. Expressions of interest for the 2024-25 Waterwise Greening Scheme are now open to all waterwise councils statewide. Learn more >> https://lnkd.in/gijdB-Dg 7NEWS Australia

📝Stay informed about our Planned Burning Program 2024! Sustainable Timber Tasmania’s annual Autumn Planned Burning Program will commence in the coming weeks. Planned burns are conducted each Autumn to regenerate harvested forests and enhance community safety by reducing fuel loads across Tasmania’s public production forests. Approximately 180 burns are planned across Permanent Timber Production Zone (PTPZ) land this year. Sustainable Timber Tasmania carefully plans each burn for safety, smoke dispersal, and protection of assets, infrastructure, and special values. Our aim is to minimise smoke impact by carefully planning dispersal away from populated areas. On days when weather conditions are unfavourable, burns are postponed. Burns are also managed in accordance with the Coordinated Smoke Management System administered by the Forest Practices Authority. Sustainable Timber Tasmania shares advisories with local media outlets and posts updates on our Sustainable Timber Tasmania Facebook page twice daily. For real-time updates on active burns, visit the "What's Burning Now?" page on the Tasmania Fire Service website. For more information or to discuss Sustainable Timber Tasmania’s Planned Burning Program, please contact our stakeholder engagement team at stakeholder@sttas.com.au or on (03) 6169 2800 or visit https://lnkd.in/gXeH736s #thrivingforests #plannedburning #managingforests #regenerationforthenextgeneration #community

Smoke from this burn is low lying and travelling in an easterly direction. It may be visible to nearby communities. Sustainable Timber Tasmania's Planned Burning Program aims to regenerate harvested forests in a similar manner to natural regeneration following a bushfire and to improve the safety of local communities by reducing fuel loads across Tasmania's public production forests. I recently came across a study measuring water literacy in Australia and was surprised to learn that only 40% of participants understood that the amount of water available for use in Australia is finite. Now, while I may not fully grasp the intricacies of Victoria's water grid, there are a few things I do know. Large catchment dams on major waterways supply potable water by diverting substantial volumes from rivers and creeks. This water is then treated and distributed across Melbourne, eventually reaching our homes. As our population grows and the climate becomes drier and warmer, the demand for water increases, leaving even less for the rivers and creeks themselves. Some would argue that our rivers are on life support, receiving only the bare minimum to keep flowing, unable to sustain the communities that depend on them. The Maribyrnong River, for example, still lacks an environmental water entitlement, despite discussions dating back to the 2006 Central Region Sustainable Water Strategy. How can governments justify investing in alternative water supplies, such as desalination and purified recycled water, when half the population doesn’t even realise Australia’s freshwater reserves are finite? State wide, the health of our rivers and creeks is on the decline, and public understanding of this is crucial. Research shows that increased knowledge leads to greater support for public policies. For instance, providing information about desal and purified recycled water to reduce our dependence on rivers has been shown to enhance public support for these initiatives. Yes, alternative water supply options are expensive, both financially and energetically, and consumers will bear the cost. Politically, it’s a tough sell, especially with the cost of living already so high. But, eventually our supplies will be low and we'll have to pay those costs, the difference being, by then, the ecological integrity of Victoria's waterways will be stuffed. Clean freshwater is a privilege, not something to be taken for granted. The price we pay on our water bills (~ 0.3 c/litre) reflects a part of the cost. Our rivers and creeks are paying the ultimate price. #ConcernedWaterwaysAlliance #UrbanWaterwaysAlliance Maribyrnong River and Waterways Association, Yarra Riverkeeper Association, Merri Creek Management Committee, Werribee River Association, KooyongKoot Alliance, Darebin Creek Management Committee Inc, Andrew Kelly, Angela Clarke, Scott Seymour

The New England Water Works Association and its Water Resources, Groundwater, Conservation (which I am the chair), and Sustainability Committees are seeking presentations for the 2024 Water Resources and Sustainability Symposium. The symposium will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Devens Common Center in Devens, MA. This year, we seek to discuss current challenges, emerging trends, and future opportunities with respect to local, regional, and state planning efforts, as well as water resource availability, protection, and management. Development pressures exist in many New England states. If your community, region, state, or water system is effectively addressing these issues, or running into challenges, I ask you to consider submitting an abstract by May 17. https://lnkd.in/gtMJ49mE
