They usually outwit me.   What surprised you most about joining Mountain Rescue?  The fact that you still learn new things after 30 years and some of those things can come from a team member who has just joined.   If you could take any famous person on a walk, who would it be and where? Way back in 2004 I started as a Summer Ranger at Albert Park for three months... fast forward nineteen years, it’s time to finally say farewell to Parks Victoria. Parks or PV, as it’s affectionately known, is an organisation full of many passionate, committed people that work tirelessly to conserve and protect National Parks. It’s an employer that provides so many opportunities outside of ‘being a job’, so it’s no surprise many of my highlights are related to engaging and supporting Victorian communities: 1. Launching the Junior Ranger Program & Ranger Roo at Fun4Kids in 2007. Facilitating a connection between people and our parks is one of the most important things we do. The Junior Ranger Program provides the opportunity to create that connection at an early age and build those future park advocates. 2. As a General Firefighter, Crew Leader and Operations Officer, I had the opportunity to deploy across the state to help protect communities during some of the worst bushfires in history. I was also fortunate to raise thousands of dollars for charity representing Parks Victoria in the emergency services Eureka Tower Challenge in 2105 and 2017. 3. Presenting Bring Your Lipstick with @Sandra Robinson at the AFAC Conference in 2015, highlighting the importance of gender equity in the male dominated emergency services sector. This work led to the the Burning Ambition video for International Women’s Day in 2016, which included leaders from across the sector committing to gender equity actions. 4. Fundraising for the Fred Hollows Foundation through participating in the 30km Coastrek challenge in 2016. 5. Representing Parks in our inaugural involvement in the Pride March in 2018. An absolute honour! And of course, it’s the people who have become lifelong family and friends that have made a career at PV so hard to walk away from. The fulfillment derived from being a part of Rotary stems from the knowledge that their actions have positively impacted someone else's life. The individual believes that the desire to create a meaningful difference in the world is a crucial virtue to cultivate. They are constantly inspired by the dedicated individuals encountered within Rotary, witnessing the passion they invest in their roles and the tangible results they achieve. These individuals embody the ethos of the organization, embodying it in their daily lives, and in return, Rotary garners a wealth of goodwill and support. Moreover, they believe in the importance of incorporating fun into their endeavors. As Dr. Seuss aptly put it, "Fun is good." Therefore, they infuse a sense of liveliness into their club's volunteering activities, reinterpreting the "Service above Self" mantra to include enjoyment. After all, if joy is not found in their Rotary service, their commitment may wane. Contributing to their community and relishing the enjoyment that Rotary brings allows them to break out of their comfort zone. Through Rotary, they have the opportunity to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering a sense of equality among them as Rotarians. In today's fast-paced world, it is easy to overlook the significance of building community and embracing joy. If each person made a conscious effort daily to positively impact someone's life, particularly those they do not know, the world would undoubtedly be a better place. Sometimes we're so busy doing, doing, doing that we lose track of what and whom we're "doing" this for. 🤦♀️ For instance, I've been spending more time in the I&M Canal National Heritage Area Visitor Center lately**. One weekend I was rush, rush, rushing around when I started to talk to this lovely family. At first, in my head, I was berating myself for stopping to chat. I don't have time for this. I have "more important things to do." But, then it occurred to me that what I'm doing right now is really important. One of our mission goals is to engage with the younger generation and bring in new stewards for our National Heritage Area. If we don't bring in new generations, the IMCNHA won't be here after I'm gone. All this rushing around will have been for nothing. I invited the two girls to become National Park Service Jr. Rangers and handed them our Jr. Ranger Activity Book. They completed the requirements before they left, and I swore them in. Hopefully, that will be the start of a continuing relationship with our NHA. At the very least, it was a good reminder to me of what is important. What big picture items have you lost track of while you've been doing this, that and the other thing? Beth Chandler has made an indelible mark on our city. I’ve had the honor of serving on the Board of YW Boston since 2018. That was the year that Beth began her leadership as President & CEO of this crucial Boston organization. In 2020, I became the Board Chair, which gave me the opportunity to work more closely with Beth. Beth is stepping down this summer, after 12 years with YW Boston and six as its head. With her guidance and advocacy, YW Boston has made Boston a more equitable place for the benefit of all residents, in particular women of color. Beth stewarded the non-profit through historic challenges, from a complex strategic planning process to navigating the pandemic to selling the landmark Back Bay building. She also seeded the growth of diversity and inclusion throughout our institutions.  I’ve learned a lot from Beth over the years. From her strength—she’s very direct, and stands up for what she believes to be right. From her willingness to listen to different opinions and perspectives, and change her mind. And I particularly appreciate her combination of vision and strategy. Anyone who wants to make transformative change in their organizations can learn lessons from her tenure. When she led us in a deep probe into the meaning of our mission, she helped us focus on who our beneficiaries really are: not just the clients we consulted or the participants in the program, but the colleagues and clients of those people. She saw how YW Boston was a catalyst, inspiring and supporting people to be change agents in their own organizations. I vividly remember when the Board was discussing a tough decision. We’d been losing money on a volunteer-facilitated service. She wanted to hire staff to deliver it more effectively and charge a fee. We were anxious about the risk of hiring people with a budget deficit. Beth presented the alternatives clearly: we could gradually bleed out over time, or we could take this risk and build toward a sustainable model. She recognized it was the time for bold moves. We agreed. And when the demand for DEI services exploded, we had the people we needed and we were well positioned to provide the services. She also knew that boldness isn’t always about expansion. When I joined the board, YW Boston had 10 or 12 programs—we were spread a little thin. Beth and the leadership team honed the portfolio basically to three: Inclusion Boston, LeadBoston, and FYRE. These, along with advocacy campaigns like parity on boards and United Against Racism, share a theory of change: they build a group of people who have a real deep understanding of equity and inclusion, so that they can go back to their organizations and create change.  That vision has helped create a better climate for everyone. I give Beth my gratitude and my personal admiration, for all that she’s done—for YW Boston, for so many organizations that have worked with us, and for the City of Boston.
