Cutting the number of regions in Wales makes sense commercially and will ensure a greater concentration of talent for success on the pitch says Professor Dylan Jones-Evans OBE in an analysis of calls last week by former Welsh international Jonathan Davies OBE for the WRU to urgently implement a new strategy for the game from the professional to the grassroots level.

Great to see this research. Sport really can be a leader in society to help build cultural competence, social cohesion through our common love for sport. Although this uses the example of football, it can apply in other settings. I have the privilege of being involved at Edinburgh South Cricket Club, where the club's membership includes 17 different nationalities, with a diverse range of ethnicities, religions, cultural identities and beliefs - but one common thing unites us, a shared love of cricket. Cricket is a game that requires people to spend vast amounts of time together on the field, working through situations together as a team to achieve a result. Through simply being around many others with different cultural experiences and identities, I've learnt so much. Most importantly, we've embraced the multiple cultural identities and beliefs as our strength, finding space to learn about and support each other. Less 'integration into a culture' and more 'evolution of our culture together'. Sport really can be a leader in society for bringing people together. Do you have a great example from your own club or sport? Feel free to share on our Equity Coach page!

An interesting report today published by British Future and Spirit of 2012 on the role football can play in creating social cohesion in diverse communities, through a common love of football. Do you have any examples you can share of sports doing precisely that? Can sport be a leader in building cohesion and cultural competence in local communities ?

What's going on with England at the #Euros? 🏴 As the excitement of the tournament progresses, the narrative around #England's potential victory has shifted to questioning what's going wrong. As a long time fan I see this pattern repeating itself as it has for decades. Is it because - 1️⃣ World-class talent alone isn't enough. England is loaded with talent. Translating individual club success to the international stage is challenging. 2️⃣ Coaching and strategies. Should we expect #Southgate to get individual/team performances that world class coaches inspire from players like Foden, #Bellingham, Kane, Saka? 3️⃣ The fear of failure. Opting to play not to lose vs to win creates an ugly, passive game. Contrast this with the bold strategies seen in teams like Spain, Hungary , Switzerland. 4️⃣ Winning isn't good enough. England is expected to win with stylish performances. Is this fair? As the tournament unfolds, many including myself want to see more of what England is capable of. Will we? 🌟⚽ #Euros #England #Soccer #SportsAnalysis

The WSA welcomes today's publication of the Senedd Culture, Communications, Welsh Language, Sport and International Relations Committee report into the impact of funding reductions for culture and sport. Direct investment into sport via Sport Wales is approximately £8,700,000 lower than if the levels of investment in 2010 had increased in line with inflation. If Wales wishes to maintain its proud sporting history, continue to compete on the World stage, and inspire and enable our citizens to enjoy healthy and active lives, this long-term downward trend must be reversed. #3 On the way forward for WRU Ditch the Regions in Favour of Three Club Identities The regional model was a bold experiment, but it has failed—and clinging to it will only prolong Welsh rugby’s woes. It’s time to ditch the regions and embrace three well-known and historically rich club identities: Newport, Cardiff, and Llanelli. This approach acknowledges a hard truth: parochialism has no place in professional sport. Welsh rugby’s misplaced loyalty to outdated rivalries and fractured regional allegiances has stifled its potential. The regions were supposed to unify and elevate the professional game, but they have instead deepened divisions and alienated fans. Reestablishing three iconic clubs would not only restore pride and passion but also simplify the structure, making it easier to market and build support domestically and abroad. These clubs would act as the standard-bearers for Welsh rugby, creating clear pathways from grassroots to the professional game. While the decision to move away from regions might be controversial, it could not perform worse than the status quo—and would finally bring clarity to the professional landscape. I can hear the howls of indignation all the way here in NZ. To those people, strong leaders make changes when they are needed and since 2014, I have advocated change. Regions were right in 2003, they were the reasons for sustained success but that has not been the case since the incredible mismanagement of WRU financials by 2 former CEO’s. #NoGutsNoGlory

Why can’t the best England team in years win a final? On paper, this is indeed the most exciting England team in a generation. We were even made favourite for the Euros by the bookies, but unfortunately Southgate is tactically inept ….That is the simple truth. Once again, his very predictable starting 11 tactical choices failed him. We replicated the improved semi-final play, we pressed, but Jude Bellingham looked isolated for extended periods. An unfit Harry Kane at centre-forward was slow and ineffectual AGAIN. The Spain manager noted all of this, he also recognised we had another player who was not match-fit at left back with Luke Shaw. We ‘luckily’ won our way to the final because of the ‘reluctant’ use of substitutes by the manager which provided the necessary balance and attacking edge. Yet once again, ONLY in the final 20 minutes, when Ollie Watkins and Cole palmer came on did England find a dangerous attacking formation. They should have started the game, anyone that understands football knew this, that is everyone apart from Southgate … unlike his Spain counterpart. Instead, England have had to rely on fleeting moments of inspiration from its superstars, but Spain had a system and a highly competent manager to make effective use of such. So another lost final. But I truly believe the best for England is yet to come 🙏🏼, unfortunately that will never happen with Southgate as manager. …..Adiós Gareth. #success #winners #tactics #inspiration #innovation #management
