I found this article really insightful on how commercial initiatives can help support delivery of an organisation's ambitions, and that taking a positive, visitor-centred approach can be hugely impactful. Particularly interesting to me was how crucial storytelling can be in helping visitors understand an organisation's values and reason for being - something that books can do so well in a retail setting.
I had a great time collaborating with the inspirational Graham Speak on this piece for Blooloop. Graham get's all the credit for turning my waffling into coherent sentences! Commercial activity is being more embraced by the Cultural sector than every before, and I firmly believe that's a good thing!

Over three years ago, we had our first experience creating an original #IP for a new FEC in Qatar. Since then, working with IPs—newly created or existing—has been integral to our work. A recent example is our collaboration on the development of POP LAND with POP MART, a phenomenon that has emerged from China and is beginning to make a significant impact on the global market. I’ve often heard the comparison, “Pop Mart is the equivalent of Funko Pop.” While both share the idea of collectable figures as their core product, I believe the similarities end there. Funko focuses on licensing iconic characters from popular culture, allowing fans to acquire physical versions of characters they already know and love. In this sense, collecting Funko figures is more about looking back: “I own this figure because I like it or it brings back good memories of this character.” On the other hand, POP MART takes a different approach by creating its own characters and stories. These light storylines allow expansive and diversified collections. What I find particularly fascinating is how this narrative simplicity invites the observer to complete the story themselves, projecting their own experiences, memories, or emotions onto the characters. Each figure becomes a personal reflection of what the collector feels or experiences, forming a unique emotional connection. In this way, Hirono is a character that shields themselves from the outside world, evoking empathy and a desire to protect them. Dimoo, on the other hand, inspires people to recall their dreams and aspirations, symbolising the goals they still wish to achieve. Skullpanda is perhaps one of the most rebellious, representing that part of us that dares to break the rules. These characters can be more than just toys; they represent emotional states and personal aspirations. This leads me to believe that POP MART has created something similar to the sculpture of the 21st century: a domestic, accessible, and ever-evolving form of art that adapts to our lives. Unlike traditional sculpture, POP MART doesn’t offer unique or permanent pieces but a dynamic experience where characters and collections change over time, allowing consumers to update their emotions through new acquisitions. And like traditional sculpture, behind these creations are first-rate artists like Kenny Wong or Lang. The designs of POP MART figures are painstakingly crafted by top-tier contemporary artists, resulting in beautifully detailed, high-quality figurines. This, combined with affordable prices, has made the POP MART phenomenon accessible to a wide range of consumers, creating a bridge between art and mass-market collectables. With this innovative approach, POP MART moves beyond being just a competitor to Funko and opens new possibilities in the world of collectables. In conclusion, this phenomenon will undoubtedly evolve in the coming years, redefining what it means to create and collect in the modern era.

I had an amazing day with Timberland Partners in Minneapolis last week. So many great people, ideas, and more! My time with their #serviceteam brought forth an interesting #maintenance issue that really needs to be solved. One of their biggest 'time thieves' is service calls for ground fault interrupter switch resets. At least 20 minutes for each one. This is a #servicerequest that can easily be handled by a QR code next to the switch that is accompanied by a how-to video. It can also be explained by any #officeteam members if they take the call/email/text request. American Landmark Apartments has done a great job with their series of 'how-to' videos on their YouTube channel. Bozzuto also has a series of easy-to-make 'fixes' for their #apartmentresidents that they distribute through Instagram for their building, Aperture. ('Tuesdays with Tim'). Find out what simple service requests are taking valuable time away from your #maintenance teams and start a #videolibrary. Not sure how to get started? I know Devin Lusk can chime in here with some advice. So can anyone from the Realync team. You can generate free #qrcodes from numerous sites.
