Today we are reflecting on the 60th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act, which was signed into law on September 3, 1964. The law sought to protect pristine public lands that were “untrammeled by man,” an idea we now know is a myth: Before they were forced out, Indigenous people had been living in these landscapes for millennia. As the law reaches a new milestone, it’s our collective responsibility to rethink how we conceptualize “wild” places and what it means to protect them. Still, over the last six decades, the law has remained a powerful tool for preserving our most important public lands from short-sighted development and reckless logging projects. Today, there are more than 800 Wilderness Areas scattered across the country, adding up to an impressive 111 million acres. But there’s lots of work to be done. Less than three percent of the nation’s Wilderness Acres are in the Southeast. That’s why SELC and our partners are fighting for more public lands designations across the region. This week on The Boomerang. My review of Rebecca Renner's stellar non-fiction debut, GATOR COUNTRY. "Gator Country takes seriously what Floridians already know, and few people outside the state understand, that living in Florida is living on the edge–of the swamp, of the North American continent, of life. COMPARE AND CONTRAST I’m always intrigued when industry experts from across the country describe the challenges they face in specific markets. In a surprising number of cases, they are actually describing different sides of the same coin. That’s definitely not the case when it comes to conservation options and opportunities. Our Conservation Issue highlights these differences by offering a deep dive on three contrasting markets: Colorado, Florida, and Texas. In Colorado, Ken Mirr describes the number of conservation options as “the lap of luxury.” In Florida, Dean Saunders literally wrote the legislation that authorized the State of Florida to purchase development rights. In Texas, James King describes each conservation opportunity as “hand-to-hand combat,” an opportunity he relishes. Although their settings and their stories vary considerably, a passion to protect private lands unites all three. - @EricOKeefe -- Don't Miss the September Edition of the Land Report Newsletter, presented this month by King Land & Water, LLC: https://lnkd.in/e9TUYFut - Mirr Ranch Group SVN Saunders Ralston Dantzler Real Estate#IndustryExperts #ConservationOptions #ColoradoMarket #PrivateLands #LandReportNewsletter #LandConservationOpportunities #Conservation #Land #landowners #Colorado #Florida #Texas

A common dispute is when two adjacent farms disagree over a land boundary. As farmland can often span hundreds or thousands of acres, certain boundaries may prove hard to identify using standard maps. When developing or expanding properties, a common issue is the presence of #wetlands. Wetlands are land areas that are saturated or flooded with water either permanently or seasonally and are a part of our ecosystem, they’re something that should be preserved. Today, on #WorldWetlandsDay, we celebrate and emphasize the need to protect them. Our #LandUse team advocates for wetland preservation and would be more than happy to ensure your development project isn’t on a wetland. For more information on wetlands and what you can do, check out the link below. https://ow.ly/NwKK50QvApQ

Pls s/s. Push on the yellow underlined area, that says to use their tools. Ontario is not protecting its wildlife. Instead, they are pushing through destructive projects, that, if the laws were to work, would be turned down, and a BIG NO, would be attached. Pls use the template information, below, to put in your letter in the space provided. Just a quick copy, paste, and send. Thank you.❤ Guarantee that the monies would go to preserving this particular population of Blanding’s turtles or the other wildlife that depend on this watershed. The proposed quarry site lies on Crown land in the Robinson-Huron Treaty Territory. Members of Serpent River First Nation and others from relevant treaty communities have expressed issues with the consultation process. The potential devastating and long-term impacts of this project far outweigh any short-term and minimal economic benefits. Do the right thing, listen to science, Indigenous elders and community members and use your influence to reject the Darien Quarry permit. https://lnkd.in/gy_62epP
