🌍 Wrapping up an incredible week of climate innovation in NYC! 🌍 This week, we had the privilege of hosting the first intensive for cohort 5 of Innovate UK’s Global Incubator Programme, where a talented cohort of UK-based climate tech companies dove headfirst into the U.S. market. It’s been a rewarding experience to see months of planning come to life and to watch these founders take full advantage of the opportunities ahead. Here’s what we explored this week, among other topics: Customer Discovery & Value Propositions: We worked through identifying their biggest assumptions and refining their value propositions. Federal, State, and Local Regulatory Landscape: We hosted insightful sessions on navigating resources at all levels of government for those committed to driving the climate transition. U.S. Communication Styles: We explored the nuances between UK and U.S. business practices to improve cross-market communication. Mock Pitch Teardown: Companies gained an invaluable behind-the-scenes look at how VCs make investment decisions. I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished and deeply thankful to all the speakers, mentors, and participants who made this week a success. Is ChangeNow just another feel-good event? 🌍🤔 Left ChangeNow with a renewed sense of energy and optimism last week. The innovations and the positive vibes were contageous. 🚀 However this week-end’s reflection brings critical questions: - “We’re on the path to net zero, just stay the course” vs. “The essence lies in the speed of execution.” A paradox within a single panel. What’s the real urgency? 🏃♂️💨 - “Europe and France are talent-rich, just waiting for investments” vs. “Impact investments flourish in developing nations.” The investment conundrum: regional growth or global impact? 💸🌏 - Impact VCs pledge for stakeholder-centric governance, but ROI dominates investor pitches, focusing on their blockbusters rather than portfolio success rates. Are we investing in true change or just in profits? 💼📈 The debate over investment model shifts and the gap between impact funds and traditional capital prompts deep thought. Are we on the brink of change, or is it just rhetoric? Entrepreneurs are encouraged to create lifelong businesses with passion, yet the extractive nature of VC persists. Tech VCs, driven by timelines, predictable risks, and ROI demands, favor SaaS ventures, often at the expense of employee well-being. Impact VC isn’t charity, but can we address issues with the same extractive methods that caused them? Is it time to rethink banking institutional roles? As with the good intentions proclaimed on International Women’s Day, March 8th, which often aren’t followed by concrete actions on the very next days, let’s not allow ChangeNow to follow the same pattern. With €300M pledged for impact initiatives, let’s ensure these commitments lead to tangible change. It’s time for optimism to catalyze action. Participating in NSB's Forum meetup was insightful. NSB is a community of active Israeli climate-tech founders of existing companies and people who are interested in starting a company. The panel's participants included Oded Barel-Sabag, who leads our climate-related investments, who was joined by Ori Shaashua from Gigablue (portco of ours!), Uriel Klar from Epsilon ε, Dr. Avner Gross from Ben Gurion University, and Yael Weisz Zilberman from NetZero Technology Ventures. Hosted by Amitai Ziv, the discussion explored the challenges and opportunities of starting and building a climate-tech company in Israel these days. 🌱 Key discussion points and inputs: -> The climate-tech ecosystem is still shaping: In recent years, Israel's climate-tech ecosystem has emerged and made waves, thanks to the dedication and drive of individuals, organizations, and communities. However, the ecosystem is still in its early stages, with most companies still young and the trajectory for building a climate-tech company in terms of various aspects such as fundraising, commercialization and regulation is still something people are trying to figure out and learn on the go. -> VCs Interest: The landscape saw a surge in climate-focused VCs and generalist VCs gaining interest in the space. Yet, evaluating climate startups as VCs, especially generalist VCs requires a nuanced approach, often necessitating a shift in mindset and evaluation methodologies. -> Academia<>Industry: Dr. Gross highlighted the untapped potential in creating bridges between academics from various fields and potential founders. By facilitating closer ties between academia and industry, we can harness cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary perspectives, and real-world applications to accelerate the development and adoption of climate solutions. -> Embracing Moonshot Mindset: At freshfund, we try to take a 'moonshot' approach to climate-related investments. We see immense promise in companies ambitiously transforming traditional industries (like Remilk) and pioneering innovative concepts in emerging categories (such as CarbonBlue and Gigablue). Being a climate-tech entrepreneur is both challenging and exhilarating. However, we believe that the significance of the mission combined with the business opportunities, make the journey worthwhile to explore and pursue.
