A lot of people wonder what the differences are between systems engineers and software engineers. This article goes into depth about the key differences, but it's important to note that both jobs can differ drastically based on your employer or even the project/program. One key difference I've personally noticed is that systems engineers work at the macroscopic level and software engineers often work at the microscopic level. If you prefer to impact the overall big picture of a system, you will most likely see more of that as a systems engineer. If you prefer working with highly technical finer details, software engineering may be a better fit.
