The Scartho Cemetery Chapels are a pair of Grade II listed buildings located within Grimsby Cemetery, Northeast Lincolnshire. In 2022, a sympathetic scheme of restoration and conservation work began to allow the buildings to be restored to serviceable use, whilst reflecting their beautiful Victorian heritage. The project was managed by Gavin Duffy, Senior Architectural Technologist at Northeast Lincolnshire council’s partner, Equans. “We approached J&JW Longbottom Ltd to determine whether the remaining damaged and partial sections of rainwater goods could be replicated to match the original size, profile and fitting arrangement as the original Macfarlane hardware,” said Gavin. “Fortunately, the answer was yes, and it is fair to say that the results exceeded all our expectations. The rainwater goods were faithfully and accurately replicated in every aspect, right down to small details such as the holderbat (bracket) profiles. 🦪 Oyster shells as construction material? Yes! New York City really once did that.  Believe it or not, New York Harbor used to be overflowing with oysters. So much so that in order to dispose of the leftover shells, early New York City architects and engineers ground them down for use as mortar paste in new construction.  The most famous example is the original Trinity Church, built in 1698. Though it has been rebuilt numerous times throughout the centuries due to fires and other natural disasters, it still resides in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood.  🗽 These weren't just your average oysters, either.  Oyster shells from this period measured up to 10 inches in length, with early travelers and settlers even claiming some as big as 1 foot!  🏞️ Fom the time of the Dutch up until the advent of the 20th century, New York City was known as the Oyster Capital of the World. And thanks to recent efforts by the federal government and the city, with help from local organizations, New York may one day soon reclaim that title. #History #NewYorkCity #Construction #Engineering #NYC

Landmarks The #Palisades and #Eaton infernos have devastated the region, destroying over 30 historic structures in what preservationists are calling the single worst loss of such properties in Southern California’s history. The number of lost landmarks could grow significantly as the damage continues to be assessed. While institutions like the Getty Villa were saved, the fate of other notable sites remains uncertain. Among these are several influential mid-century Case Study Houses, built under the sponsorship of Arts & Architecture magazine. Confirmed losses include Altadena’s Zane Grey Estate and the Western-style home of Rogers in the Palisades, both of which held formal landmark status on the National Register of Historic Places. However, the fires also claimed many cherished community spaces, including Fox’s Restaurant in Altadena, Theatre Palisades, Moonshadows, and The Reel Inn—places that were integral to their neighborhoods as cultural and social hubs. Stone-quarrying is an industry to which medieval records refer more frequently than enlighteningly. The Strutt family has been quarried stone in Belper, Derbyshire, since the 1700s. The Strutt Family built their original mills from sandstone, as well as houses, churches, schools, bridges, and hospitals. Many of these buildings are still standing today. In my research, I found that the Strutts owned 20 quarries in Belper, Blackbrook, Chevin, Milford, Holbrook, and Bargate. I’m sure there are many more stone quarries, which I haven’t mentioned in the documentary. The Strutts quarries were mostly sandstone of different courses and colours. Strutts also had Derbyshire Millstone Grit quarry. Many quarries were used for building projects such as Mill Buildings, Musket walls, Railway Cutting and towers. Strutts understood they could save on transportation time by quarrying nearest the possible source. Workers came from far and wide to work as stone masons and labourers in Belper, which saw a boom in the Industrial Revolution. https://lnkd.in/eVaZw46D
