What a day! A roadtrip in the Nederlands. First a visit to Utrecht visiting a supplier of software for smart building management. We were having inspiring discussions and discussing future opportunities. Secondly, a visit to Dunea outside Den Haag in the midst of the dunes. So cool to visit the workshop of the future and to share experiences on how to go smart in the water business. Roy Hooijmans and Matthijs Theelen are scouting the digital path for Dunea. ”To boldly go where no man has gone before”, almost.. The sun was shining so driving across the Nederlands was a pleasure. I am looking forward to the next opportunity for a visit!

Have you explored Amsterdam's historic Dutch canals? Well, during my current visit to the country I went through the interesting history of the canals 😊 Dating back to the 12th century, these iconic waterways have been a favorite international destination, rich in history and charm. During the Dutch Golden Age, spanning the 17th and 18th centuries, the canals played a pivotal role in shaping the country's landscape and driving economic growth. 🇳🇱 Key points in the evolution of Dutch canals include: - 12th-13th centuries: Initial construction for drainage and water management. - 14th-15th centuries: Expansion for transportation and trade, connecting major cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Leiden. - 16th century: Surge in canal construction during the Dutch Revolt for defense. - 17th century: Significant expansion during the Dutch Golden Age. - 18th century: Continued construction and modernization efforts. Amsterdam's Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, and Herengracht are notable canals that have become iconic symbols, reflecting the country's "land of water" reputation. 🌍🚤 #Netherlands #DutchCanals #History #Culture

It's Friday, which means it's time for Meet the Member! Who’s in the spotlight: Full Name: Andrew Dukesell MCIAT Company Name: DBD Architectural Consultancy Ltd How many years of experience do you have in this sector? 24 Job Role: Architectural Technologist (Managing Director) Which Core value is most important to you? Building relationships. I first joined BNI 12 years ago at the inception of my business and I have friends from then that I help and still get help from. What problem does your business solve? We help property owners to design places to live, work and play, and then get them built. Favourite holiday destinations? ● Venice ● Cala D'or ● Isle of Wight What was your first and worst job? It was a broad based engineering apprenticeship for ICI, learning machining, welding, fabrication, vehicle and fixed plant repairs, with a day in college. I don't really have a worse job, there have been some grim tasks to do to be fair though. One business or personal tip: Always try to improve on yesterday. Three words that describe you. ● Hardworking ● Stubborn/tenacious (depending on your viewpoint) ● Honest Favourite food: Fresh fish usually on holiday to be fair or a fish pie. Favourite Drink: IPA/craft beer. Favourite album: Now that what I call music, lol. I prefer to listen to a mix of artists than the same, but a varied taste. Business App’s you could not live without? I could live without a lot of apps to be honest, but working without them would be a lot slower. Favourite saying? "If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got". Any final thoughts? It is a great business support network, I have met some very useful contacts and business colleagues through BNI, as well as receiving work. #BNISilk #BNI #BusinessReferrals #Networking #BNICheshireEast

Europe Vacation 24 - Reflection No. 4 (I think this may be the last one I post, though I have long list I could continue with) Tunnels!! Over the last 3 weeks I think I driven through well over 100 of them. I’ve learnt: - there is no standard for lighting in tunnels. - I much prefer tunnels with horizontal curves. - I’m terrible if the tunnel is long, straight, on a continuous grade, with bright red lights at low level either side of the tunnel. I literally have an anxiety attack with the lights converging in the distance, sending me dizzy, gripping the wheel tightly and forcing me to reduce speed significantly. I was ok if the lights were red on the right and white on the left. Absolutely no issues if dull reflector post were used. Is it just me or is this a more universal problem? A great undergraduate thesis? Get 100 or so people on driving simulators and test the impact of geometry and lighting in tunnels on drivers speed, comfort, heart rate, etc. Today’s photo: Vernassa, Italy Today’s driving song: Believe - DMAs Footnote: The A1 running the length of Croatia is a civil engineers dream. So many awesome bridges and tunnels. It blows my mind how many man hours went into designing and constructing it.

Behind us is the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, which we visited on a trip to Italy a few years back. Did you know that the tower wasn’t supposed to be leaning like it does today? It had a problem where some businesses find problems, too: its FOUNDATION. 👇👇👇 The tower was built on mixed soil, something that isn’t suited for big structures. It also had shallowly built foundations. These factors, plus the regular shifting of the soil made it tip a little. This highlights the importance of proper and sturdy foundations at the beginning of your project. Every business needs the following at its base, so it doesn’t give way as it grows from the bottom up: ✅Vision, values and purpose. What do you see your business achieving in the future? What do you stand for? Why are you doing what you are doing? These questions can be asked both in the context of your personal life and your business — both of which are connected. I would love to share more stories and business insights with you. Please give me a follow here and on other social media platforms to stay updated about posts like this.✋
